What's Ordinary About Ordinary Time?

We have reached the end of the Easter season. For the past seven weeks we have celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and before Easter we journeyed through Lent. Prior to that we celebrated the birth of Jesus during advent, Christmas and Epiphany.

Together, all of these celebrations of Jesus Christ consume about 6 months out of the 12 month year. Now, after the arrival of the Holy Spirit we enter . . . “Ordinary Time.” Ordinary time is what we call the other 6 months of the year in “church speak.” It is also referred to as the “season after Pentecost”, which can make it seem even more mundane.

Ordinary time is actually the most important time of the church year because it is when the action needs to start coming from our direction, instead of from all of God’s great acts. We’ve been empowered by the Holy Spirit to carry out God’s calling given to us through Christ. It’s a time of planting within the church and within our own lives. Caring for the Community Garden requires the dedication to a gift we share with all those around us. The continued work of the Family Ministry committee and the Women’s Guild, the Monday morning men and all of the other committees of St. Johns are the calling of Ordinary Time. Along with those programs, St John’s is continuing to be called to find new seeds of hope and love that we can plant through all of the work of our congregation.

In the same way, we are each called in our own personal lives to plant and nurture new seeds of love and kindness. It is up to each one of us to bring new hope into this often hopeless world around us. We are each endowed with the gift of the Holy Spirit to follow our discipleship in Jesus Christ.

Christmas, Easter, Pentecost . . . God has acted to teach us, empower us and send us. Now we must continue God’s actions through our individual actions. Let us go into “Ordinary Time” and accomplish “amazing” things through the power of the Holy Spirit. God has shown us the path, it’s up to us to walk it each day.

Update from Church Council

The monthly Council meeting was held on May 18 with all reports being approved.

The Council was very pleased to congratulate and welcome Rev. Ken Richter as our pastor, leader, and teacher.  We are glad to once again have a permanent minister leading our congregation.

Financially, at the end of April, we are just over $2500 to the positive for the year.  Thanks to everyone for their financial support.

Darwin Enax reported that he was able to acquire an individual to take care of the cemetery for the same price we have been paying in the past.

Council is reviewing candidates for the position of custodial lawn care at the church and also for custodial care for the building facilities.  We hope to have those positions filled soon.

For those of you that have busy schedules, please note that our mid-year congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, July 23 during the worship service.
