McMaster Family Health Team pilots menstrual equity initiative

As we recognized Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, the Department of Family Medicine is introducing an initiative to provide free menstrual products in the washrooms of McMaster Family Practice and Stonechurch Family Health Centre. Eleven gender-neutral washrooms will be stocked with organic cotton menstrual products.

The McMaster Family Health Team serves over 40,000 community members, including many individuals from equity-deserving groups (e.g., Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+, racialized, low-income, and those that are unhoused).

“Our commitment to providing exceptional, person-centred primary care must include addressing the systemic barriers to menstrual equity. Through this initiative, we aim to promote safety and dignity for all people that menstruate,” said Jill Berridge, co-executive director of the McMaster Family Health Team.

This initiative was founded on the pillars of accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability.

Project update: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is characterized by unexplained persistent and disabling fatigue. There is ongoing debate within the medical community about the influence of psychosocial and physiological factors and the stigmatization that people living with ME/CFS can experience. Management of ME/CFS is often challenging and patients may be presented with a wide range of treatment options. The current study, a collaboration between researchers in the Departments of Family Medicine (Vanstone) and Anesthesia (Busse, Zeratkaar), explores how participants who experienced sustained symptom improvement understand and navigate their recovery process. To date, the research team has completed 33 interviews with individuals who have experienced some degree of symptom improvement or recovery from ME/CFS. It has been heard from participants that they understand themselves to work independently to manage their symptoms and to identify new therapies to try to improve their condition. Through analysis, the research team has developed a theory of how people with ME/CFS learn about and select interventions to try, and then how they use their experiences to make decisions about ceasing, continuing, or adapting those therapeutic efforts. This project is nearing completion and will be presented at the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research Conference in May 2023 and at the Society for Academic Primary Care Scientific Meeting in July 2023.
Project update: Health TAPESTRY

Health TAPESTRY is a complex primary care program aimed at assisting older adults to stay healthier for longer through four parts: interprofessional health care teams, trained volunteers, technology, and community connections. Results of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the program at six sites across Ontario found that Health TAPESTRY was successfully implemented in these diverse settings, but we did not reproduce the effects on hospitalizations and physical activity found in the initial RCT. We found beneficial effects on both primary care access as well as other key aspects of primary care (such as longitudinality and comprehensive care). Beyond this work, we also explored each of the four parts of Health TAPESTRY, as well as the health economics of the program, through evaluations and associated manuscripts. Six of these manuscripts have been published, with two further upcoming. Learn more and see links to the papers.

Info-Morsels: Bringing our presence to work (and then back home)

Info-Morsels are a fresh, bite-sized faculty development offering! The latest Info-Morsel is addresses the concept of incorporating presence and silence into work (and then back home) by implementing a contemplative practice. As the quality of presence grows, we may hear, see and do things differently. We may become less burdened by difficult experiences while enabling us to hold onto meaningful silence, allowing us to have more mental and physical energy. Enjoy!
