Yesterday marked one week since the deadly five-alarm fire in SouthPark that tragically took the lives of Demonte Sherrill and Ruben Holmes.
Over 90 firefighters and dozens of police officers and paramedics bravely responded. They faced obstacles, including two maydays, and risked their own lives while heroically rescuing 15 people from the fire.
Last night, the SouthPark community came together at SouthPark After Five to honor the victims and to thank first responders from the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and MEDIC. The first 30 firefighters that responded to the fire were represented at the event, including those from Stations 2, 12, 15, 16, Rescue 10, Battalion Chiefs 1 and 5, and Deputy Chief Samuel Jones.
Attendees left words of support on a "Thank You" banner that will be delivered to SouthPark's Fire Station 16, heard remarks from city leaders, and participated in a moment of silence in honor of the victims.
The SouthPark community is deeply grateful for our first responders, and is devastated by the loss of life as a result of last week's fire. We thank our first responders, and thank the community for showing their support.

Demonte Sherrill was a hardworking resident of Charlotte and a native of North Kannapolis who tragically died in the fire, along with his co-worker Ruben Holmes. He was a father of four, with children ages 13, 12, 10, and 5 years old.
The grief-stricken parents of Demonte, Onita Sherrill and Terry Campbell, and Demonte's fiancee, Christina Stovall, are devastated by the loss. As they navigate this painful journey, they require support from the community to help ease the financial burden left behind by Demonte's untimely passing.
