From the Soul of My Shoe: Courage
By Marissa Frusciante

Courage is an interesting word.  I think of it often as I watch my husband go off to work on his shift with the fire department or when my father was receiving chemo and radiation treatments.  I thought of this when my cousin went off to Afghanistan in the mid 2000s.  The courage it takes for every-day individuals to get up and just simply do their job.  Always being ready to step in and fight, yet not knowing the outcome of their personal battle.  Whatever your battle is, in your personal life or professional career, I am in awe of the courage it takes you to complete your everyday battles.  May we all look to those in our own lives who have to pick themselves up daily and harness the will to fight.

As we attend parties this weekend, let us remember those we have lost to battles that continue to keep us free.  Thank you to the many members of NewRo Runners who fought for our freedom.

The Unknown

by E.O. Laughlin

I do not understand...
They bring so many, many flowers to me—
Rainbows of roses, wreaths from every land;
And hosts of solemn strangers come to see
My tomb here on these quiet, wooded heights.
My tomb here seems to be
One of the sights.

The low-voiced men, who speak
Of me quite fondly, call me The Unknown:
But now and then at dusk, Madonna-meek,
Bent, mournful mothers come to me alone
And whisper down—the flowers and grasses through—
Such names as "Jim" and "John"...
I wish I knew.

And once my sweetheart came.
She did not—nay, of course she could not—know,
But thought of me, and crooned to me the name
She called me by—how many years ago?
A very precious name. Her eyes were wet,
Yet glowing, flaming so...
She won't forget!
