PCD Committee Meeting Minutes
May 2, 2023

Near Northwest Area Plan: Review and Discussion of the latest sections of the Near Northwest Area Plan following the April 25 Steering Committee Meeting.

Tim Boers, a Steering Committee member of the Near Northwest Area Plan (and Chair of the HUNI PCD), reviewed some highlights of the meeting. The Near Northwest Area Plan, comprising the neighborhoods of Jefferson Park, Highland, Sunnyside and Chaffee Park, is intended to be a more detailed update of the Blueprint Denver Plan (adopted in 2019), which established a working and evolving planning blueprint for the city.

Next steering committee meeting is on Zoom, May 23 from 6-8 pm. https://www.denvergov.org/Government/Agencies-Departments-Offices/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory/Community-Planning-and-Development/Planning/Community-Engagement/CPD-Calendar/2023/NNW-Steering-Committee-Meeting

City Council District One updates: Melissa Horn from Councilwoman Sandoval’s office discussed the continued progress of the ADU updating/text amendment process through the city legislative process. It’s scheduled to go before the City Council on June 5. What is an "ADU"?

Accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, are self-contained, smaller living spaces that are an extension of an existing property. They are often called mother-in-law suites, granny flats, casitas, backyard cottages, garage apartments or basement apartments. An ADU has its own kitchen, bath and sleeping area, but is not considered a separate property that could be sold on its own.

Curbside Access Plan for Highland: At the April 28 “Ask the Planner” virtual meeting, Scott Burton, city planner, explained the recently announced draft plan for parking in the Highland. The link below has a  map of the areas and a summary of how Highland residents can get parking permits if they are on streets directly affected by this Curbside Access Plan. The CAP is expected to be implemented at the end of 2023. https://www.denvergov.org/Government/Agencies-Departments-Offices/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory/Parking-Division/Plans-and-Outreach/Access-Plans. If you did not receive a letter from the city that describes the draft plan of the CAP and you live in this part of Highland (east of Zuni and south of 38th Ave), check the link.

Speed Limit Changes

20 MPH Local Speed Limit Reduction

In 2022, Denver’s default speed limit changed from 25 mph to 20 mph. This change applies to Denver's local streets — primarily the roads with no stripes that go through residential blocks. Additionally, wherever speed limit signs are not posted, the default speed limit will be 20 mph, per city ordinance.
