Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and caregivers in our community!
I am so grateful for my own mother, and for my grandmothers, who have all inspired me to grow into my own woman. My mom’s mom, Della, worked as a typist in County Social Services. She was a hard worker and a dedicated public servant, while simultaneously raising four children as a single mom. She would be so proud to celebrate me in my role elected as a County Supervisor today, knowing that when I was born Monterey County had not yet seen a woman elected to this seat.
My dad's mom, Bette, was a military wife who traveled the world with my grandpa, supporting his career as an army colonel while raising four children. She was a strong and independent woman who loved to entertain, and who taught me the importance of always putting family first.
My mom, Gail, is a local legend whose commitment to women, children, and families is unparalleled. She started Parent’s Place because she knew that new parents need education, support, and community in order to raise healthy families - and that healthy families build strong communities. Her love and service has impacted thousands of new parents over the years, and I am SO proud to be her daughter.
I recognize that we all bring a unique voice and lived experience into our work, and it is so important that we include the voices of mothers at every level of government. As the only mother on the Board of Supervisors, I am proud that my role as a mom informs my work on a daily basis. I am committed to making sure that all families have the resources and support they need to thrive.
Thank you to all the mothers and caregivers in our community for your love, support, and dedication. You make our world a better place.
Happy Mother's Day!
YOUR VOICE IS APPRECIATED
My team and I rely on communication from individuals like you to keep us informed about issues that matter to all Monterey County residents. Do not hesitate to reach out for any assistance if you need it. And remember, all BOS meeting agendas are posted online here: https://monterey.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx
While my focus this past few months has been disaster response and recovery, my team made sure I found time to spend time in community. Sharing food and laughs while talking systems and policy change, is just one of the ways this mom stays sane and able to give my all every day. Here are a few snap shots from my time out working as your District Four Supervisor, including: wrapping up my Salinas Town Hall, presenting a resolution in recognition of Maternal Mental Health month, enjoying the company of some of powerful Marina women at Community Foundation's Annual Women's Fund Luncheon, yucking it up with Councilmembers Pacheco and Burks at Seaside's Earth Day Celebration, and being grilled on valley water issues by the Salinas Women's Club.
