VALDEZ FLY-IN DRAWS A CROWD
Pilots and flight enthusiasts watch a fly-by from the Valdez Convention & Civic Center Saturday Night
VALDEZ – More than a thousand spectators lined the tarmac at Valdez Pioneer Field Saturday to watch skilled pilots from all over Alaska and the Lower 48 compete in the STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) Competition. The STOL competition is the main event, but aerobatic pilots Scott Sexton and Melissa Burns delighted the crowd with shows both Saturday and Sunday. Vendor booths were hopping on Saturday after the skies cleared and exhibits and flight demonstrations added to the fun. The two-day event featured a flour bombing competition and balloon bust competition for pilots as well as a balsa-wood airplane competition that anyone could try. On Saturday evening the pilot with the shortest take off and landings were announced at an awards dinner at the Valdez Civic Center.

BEARS ARE OUT: KEEP BEARS AT A DISTANCE
3 Ways to keep bears away from your home are to dispose of garbage properly:
1. Push trash out on the curb the day of pick up only, not the night before
2. If food waste is especially greasy or smelly you might consider running it to the dumpster
3. Make sure dumpsters closed and latched
City of Valdez Animal Control thanks you for taking extra steps to ensure bears stay out of garbage in Valdez. Animal Control Services - (907) 835-4560
