TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

Monday saw a cool and breezy start to Teacher Appreciation Week here in Carson City with the pear blossoms falling like a late spring snow. Meanwhile in Las Vegas, CCSD recognized our New Educators of the Year. Superintendent Jara and site administrators surprised these new, passionate educators and celebrated their dedication to our students.

You can join us in celebrating our 2023 New Educators of the Year here.

The Government Relations team expresses our deepest gratitude to all of the incredible educators in our community who do the amazing work of shaping our students and preparing them for the future.

SCHOOL SAFETY

ICYMI, Board President Garcia-Morales, Superintendent Jara, CCSDPD Chief Blackeye, and our law enforcement partners held a press conference this week to discuss school safety, imploring parents to participate in ensuring student safety at school and over the summer.

IN REVIEW

Today marks 24 days left in the 82nd Session of the Nevada Legislature.

Monday saw the first hearing of AB 175 in the Senate Education Committee. This bill would add four non-voting members to the CCSD Board of School Trustees with appointments by the Board of County Commissioners and the City Councils of the Cities of Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas. We, along with our partners at the Nevada Association of School Boards and the Nevada Association of School Superintendents, oppose this bill.

The Senate Education Committee will decide if AB 175 is brought forward for a committee vote.

Yesterday, the Nevada Department of Education budget for the Pupil-Centered Funding Plan was approved by the Joint Assembly Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committee. Some key takeaways from this budget closing are:

  • The $11.5 billion funding for K-12 represents a 26% increase in funding over the 2021-2023 biennium.

  • This funding represents an investment in CCSD of $3.49 billion in FY 24 and $3.65 billion in FY 25.

  • The weights for English Language, at-risk, and gifted and talented pupils are increasing.

    • English Language Learners from 0.23 to 0.45.

    • At-Risk Pupils from 0.03 to 0.35.

    • Gifted and Talented Pupils remained at 0.12.

We are grateful for this unprecedented and historic investment in education from the governor and the legislature. This investment will go a long way to equipping teachers, students, staff, and administrators with the tools to improve student outcomes.
