Co-operation, Education, Excellence

While we have finally emerged from the pandemic, the last few months may be challenging to some.  Many have had to deal with health challenges.  Nations have had to deal with wars, conflicts, natural and economic challenges.    Domestically, the effects of inflation can be easily felt.

One of the reasons for practicing Wushu Tai Chi and Qigong is to train ourselves to deal with challenges.  We can deal with challenges better when we work together.  In our practices, we aim to coordinate our body movements.  Perhaps if we can extend that coordination to our families, work groups, associations, we can overcome challenges better as a team.

Our informal WTQA motto of "Co-operation, Education, Excellence" is apt to describe WTQA as an association of practitioners working together, helping each other in overcoming challenges we face.

Sam Au
President
on behalf of WTQA Committee

Welcome to New Members
On behalf of the Committee, I would like to welcome the following new and upgraded members:
21st WTQA Festival - 24th Sep 2023
The Committee decided that the coming WTQA Festival will be held on 24th September instead of August as previously announced.  The later date of the Festival is due to the availability of venue.  This later time will allow us more time to prepare for the event.  The event will be held at Boroondara Sports Complex, Balwyn North, Victoria.

The Festival, In addition to providing opportunities for members to compete, is a perfect opportunity for us to get together, re-connect with each other, and make new friends of shared interest.  Further more, the Committee hopes this and similar events in future will help to promote Wushu, Tai Chi and Qigong in general and our WTQA organisation members and instructor members in particular.

Please note that at this year's Festival, Wushu event will be performed on wooden floor instead of carpet.  Please see below for more information.

The Festival can only go ahead if we have your participation as competitors, judges, organisers, marshals or helpers.  If you can help in any way, please email sam@wtqa.org.au.

WTQA Wushu competition carpet

Due to cost of storage and transport, the WTQA Committee decided to no longer retain the Wushu competition carpets.  WTQA aims to continue to organise Wushu competition, but the competition will be conducted on wooden floor instead.

The two carpets are 4 x 14 m in dimension.  They are blue / brown in colour and are in good condition as far as we can ascertain.  There is a trolley for the transport of the carpets.   According to our records, the carpets were valued at over $4000 at time of purchase.  Instead of selling the carpets, WTQA would prefer one of our members could take over the carpets.  A donation to WTQA would be appreciated.  Please contact Sam Au at sam@wtqa.org.au if interested.

Melbourne University’s Beginner Tai Chi programme

Article by Jenny Harrison

It was an honour to be involved with Melbourne University’s Beginner Tai Chi programme.  Julia Zhu is basing her PhD study on the effectiveness of online learning, specifically for those with hip and knee osteoarthritis. An expert panel of Tai Chi Masters and instructors was brought together to discuss which postures of the Beijing 24 would be appropriate to teach online.  Consumers who have osteoarthritis were also consulted.  After agreeing which postures would be safe and ‘teachable’ for an online programme, I was tasked with not only the job of developing a new Form, but presenting it as a 12-week programme.  The expert panel expressed its wish that the programme respect the Art of Tai Chi, meaning the principles of movement and martial applications were to be included.  It was not to be just another online programme teaching an isolated Form.

Can virtual community-based cardiac rehabilitation program help reduce cardiac events?

Currently our member Dr Guoyan (Emily) Yang at Western Sydney University's NICM Health Research Institute (NICM HRI), is leading a clinical trial on cardiac rehabilitation for Chinese migrants in Australia. This trial at NICM HRI is currently recruiting participants to volunteer for a study investigating the feasibility, acceptance, effects and cost-effectiveness of a new co-designed, community-based cardiac rehabilitation program for Chinese migrants in Australia. This cardiac rehabilitation program includes health education, shared medical appointment and virtual Tai Chi classes.

This study will help inform the design of a large-scale study to determine the cost-effectiveness of the cardiac rehabilitation program and the health benefits gained from a 24-week program.

Attached are the flyers in Chinese and in English.

More information can also be fund on the trial website: NICM HRI | Cardiac rehabilitation program for Chinese migrants in Australia (westernsydney.edu.au).

WULONG TAI CHI KUNG FU

Wulong is proud to announce a rare and special workshop.

In June 2023 Professor Lily Sun will teach the Yang Style Taichi Fan 28 routine at a workshop in Melbourne, Australia.

Where: Dance House, 150 PRINCES STREET, CARLTON NORTH, VIC, 3054

Taichi Fan – Not For Sissies!

The taichi fan has a very long history as a Chinese Martial Arts weapon. The ribbed fan was traditionally used by men in China while the solid fan was far more popular with women. The folded fan could be easily carried and not draw obvious attention as a weapon. Hence a martial artist with a fan in his hand at a social function could at one moment be the elegant scholar, and in the next, a deadly fighter.

Fighting fans were made of wood, bamboo or more commonly, metal. Taichi fans are usually wood or bamboo, while the external arts feature the metal fans which don’t require as much subtlety of technique. The outer edge was extremely sharp while each rib featured a knife-like point. As a weapon it could then be used in either a strike or piercing manner when closed or for blocking and slicing when opened. A feature of the fan in wushu is the sharp crack of sound it makes as it is opened and closed through a flick of the wrist. This startling noise was used to momentarily distract the opponent before going in to attack. So anytime you think the Taichi Fan is “sissy” think again!!

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to benefit from Professor Sun’s expert instruction.

While Professor Sun is proficient in numerous martial arts weapons, she has a particular love of the taichi fan, and has undertaken extensive additional research into its history and mastery. Professor Sun has trained extensively with the creator and recognised expert of the modern Yang Style Taiji Shan (taichi fan), Professor Yang Li, who is also a consultant master to Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu on matters of modern taichi curriculum .

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

  • Clear and easy to follow instruction from Australia’s most accomplished taichi instructor – a rare and not to be missed opportunity
  • Foundation skills and techniques for the taichi fan
  • First series movements of the newest and most popular modern taichi fan routine – Yang Style Taichi Fan 28.
