Professional Development

ASV Hosts K-5 Math Collaborative

This past May 11-12, 2023 ASV hosted the second session for the AISiS (American International Schools in Spain) K-5 Math Collaborative. Teachers from the American School of Barcelona, American School of Madrid, Benjamin Franklin International School and American School of Valencia participated in a two day workshop that focused on digging deeper with our approaches to teaching and learning math.

All participants experienced a labsite in the Kinder Blue class that was led by Ms. Alyssa Martinez where teachers observed both student and teacher moves/actions during the lesson. The labsite focused on an approach called a “Data Talk” where children approach visual  information (tables and charts) and make their own conclusions about the shown data.

Lost and Found Reminder

We have a large number of items of clothing found around campus that are not properly marked with a student’s first and last name, which means that it is not possible to return them to students.

If your child has lost an item, please ask them to look through the Lost and Found this coming week.  Items not retrieved by Friday, June 2, 2023 will be donated to a local charity.

Spring MAP Testing

Next week we continue our Spring 2023 Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing for all students in Grades 3-10.  Students will take math and reading tests on separate days within the next two weeks.  Each test is approximately an hour long, but actual length varies for each student.

We would like you to know a few important things about this test:
  • Every year this test is administered twice annually to all ASV Grades 3-10 students.
  • Students do not need to prepare for it
  • Students can take all the time they need, and often the longer they take, the better they do (taking time on each question contributes to accuracy!)
  • Students should do their best as this is an important measurement of growth and learning for them and the school that is used to inform our instruction, interventions and programs
The school uses this information in a variety of ways, including to track each students’ growth and make decisions to meet each child’s needs.  The most important thing you can do is to ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep before the test and has a good breakfast before school so they can do their best on the assessment.

Below are the dates and times for each grade level’s test. They will be administered the first period of the day when children are fresh and able to focus.  You will receive the results of this MAP assessment with the Semester Report Cards. For more information, please refer to the parent toolkit which is available online.

Parent @ Home Learning Series: What Parents Should Know About Streaming

Tuesday, May 16. 14:00-14:45

What 'influencer' is your child watching? Join Mr. Landete, our Technology Director to discuss what parents should know about streaming, streamers and influencers. Live streaming gives kids the possibility to watch and interact with celebrities and other unknown adults and teens directly through their mobile devices. There are plentiful positive interactions but this capability also represents an open door to inappropriate content and other dangers like grooming, monetary subscriptions, hate messaging, etc. We will discuss tips to prevent the cons of streaming and ways to support your child through open communication and education.

Grades 3-4 Sports Park Time

On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, Grades 3-4 students celebrated the final of the Soccer tournament that has been taking place during lunch park time once a week in March, April and May 2023.

86 students on 10 teams participated in this activity. The objective was to encourage all students  to play soccer, promoting inclusion and risk taking between students. We had special help from Ms. Miriam Blasco who organized balanced teams and arbitrated during the matches.

Nursery Learning Showcase

Nursery students have been learning about farm animals. As a culmination of this work, parents were invited to attend the Nursery Learning Showcase on Friday, May 12, 2023.

Students and parents worked together to complete activities within the classroom and out on the terrace. The children helped to paint a ´Three Little Pigs´ house and made different shapes on farm themed playdough mats. While on the terrace students played a game involving farm animals.

Grade 11 Biology Students Join the SWICEU Closing Ceremony

The CEU Cardenal Herrera University held the official closure of the 2023 SWICEU project on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. The Grade 11 students who have collaborated in this research and their teacher, Ms. Nonay, joined the event to hear the presentation of the results and receive their participation diplomas.

SWI CEU is a scientific project aiming to find microorganisms with potential antibiotics properties while raising awareness about the increase in bacterial resistance.  Lab work is guided by university students who visit the schools and teach students to isolate microorganisms.

The closing ceremony included the presentation of the “instructional formats" created by the participant schools. In this year's edition, ASV students rewrote the lyrics of Meghan Trainor's “Made You Look” hit to tell a story about good use of antibiotics. “Our students are very happy to have participated in this research and have learned a lot from the UCH mentors assigned this year,” Ms. Nonay says.

Second Week in Gommern, Germany

ASV students participating in the exchange with Europaschule Gymnasium finished their time in Gommern (Germany) on Friday, May 12, 2023.

The second week of the trip began with an interesting field trip to Magdeburg, the capital of the Saxony-Anhalt lander. “We visited the Magdeburg cathedral, an amazing example of gothic architecture and the Grüne Zitadelle Magdeburg, ia building designed by the famous architect Hundertwasser that showed us colorful facades, green roofs and wave-like shapes,” Ms. Bozena Schmidt describes.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the group spent all of their time at the host school. “This gave them the chance to participate in different lessons and  have an impression of the German school system,” Ms. Ida Farkas says.  Both groups were involved in creative activities, an art project and a theater project. The weather was good to enjoy outside activities in the afternoons.

“With this exchange, students have expanded their cultural knowledge of Germany,” Ms. Schmidt adds.

A Group of ASV Families Supports LOHADA, an Organization Helping Disadvantaged Children in Tanzania

As mentioned in ASV Voices 342 (April 1, 2023), a group of ASV families traveled  to Arusha, Tanzania, in April 2023 to collaborate in the renovation of the facilities of LOHADA,  a local organization that supports disadvantaged children.

According to Ms. Ashamalla, it was an extremely successful trip in which they were able to raise $51,000 for LOHADA and paint nine classrooms and put the walls up for the new dormitory. “We carried about 500 50-pound bricks, we shoveled more mounds of dirt than we could count, we learned how to mix sand and cement to create mortar and we fell asleep exhausted each day from a hard day's work,” she describes.

The group prepared a party for all of the children hosted in LOHADA’s site, which required peeled potatoes for more than 240 people, paint faces, serve food and play soccer.
