Opportunities for research and advocacy in health disparities within the South Asian community
The South Asian Health and Research Group (SAHARA) was founded in 2019 at New York University. The organization aims to foster collaboration among students, academics, and healthcare providers in investigating and addressing disparities in health, quality of care, and access within the South Asian community within and outside the US. May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
In many communities - and especially within the South Asian community - mental health and wellbeing unfortunately take a backseat to other health concerns. When ongoing stressors negatively affect psychosocial wellbeing, one's overall health takes a toll. Mental Health awareness month provides members of our community with the opportunity to take a stand against stigma and engage in critical dialogue to inform one another about the implications of mental heath. Moreover, it reminds us about the necessity of being there for each other and maintaining strong support systems during challenging times.
The South Asian Mental Health Initiative & Network (SAMHIN) is a non-profit that aims to address the mental health needs and concerns of the South Asian community in the United States. SAMHIN's mission focuses on decreasing the stigma tied with mental illness and providing resources for people who seek help.
