EXERCISE SNACKING

A new approach to physical activity

Have you heard about exercise snacking? It’s a new approach to physical activity and it might just work for you!

We know that being more active lowers our risk of many diseases, including cancer, but it also positively impacts our mental health too. That’s why ’move more‘ is one of our Cancer Prevention Recommendations. But longer chunks of physical activity don't work for everyone.

Just as you might grab a snack like a banana, an exercise "snack" involves activity lasting for only seconds or several minutes. Think little and often.

BLADDER CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

This month is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, and we're thankful to have Ken Wilson as one of our supporters to share his cancer story. Bladder cancer is the 10th most common cancer in the UK, with 10,515 cases diagnosed in 2019. It may come as a surprise that men are 4 times more likely to develop this type of cancer than women.

"For the past 18 years, my wife and I have been through numerous trips to the hospital, countless check-ups and treatments, but we are still here and enjoying life together.

"I'm very fortunate to have had a positive mindset, which has helped throughout my cancer journey. It was lucky that I spotted something wasn’t right early enough so I could receive treatment quickly – which ultimately saved my life.

"I’m here and alive, and I might not have been if I hadn’t had the operations for my bladder and bowel cancers. My motto in life is: try and look on the bright side and if you think things aren’t going as they should, then get it checked by doctors."

WE'VE LAUNCHED OUR NEW HELPLINE

Living with cancer and going through cancer treatment can make food seem less appealing and cause many people to lose their appetite altogether. Common side-effects can also have a significant impact on quality of life and ability to enjoy food.

Our expert dietitians are here to help tackle any issues you may have relating to nutrition and cancer, such as taste changes and appetite loss, interactions between food and medication, weight loss and how to maintain a healthy weight during treatment.

Our helpline is staffed by oncology specialist dieticians, who can provide up-to-date and reliable information about the role of nutrition, from diagnosis through to treatment and beyond.
