Pachanga de Frida is IN PERSON on June 24th!
Hola Center Community!

This is Ricardo Gallego (He, Him) and I am the Director of Latin@x Services at The Center. I am so delighted to tell you that our iconic event Pachanga de Frida is back in person at The Center this year! This event celebrates Frida Kahlo and commemorates the legendary life of one of the most influential queer Mexican painters of the mid-twentieth century. At this 21+ event, guests will enjoy live music, dancing, multiple art exhibits by local Latino/a/x vendors, a Frida look-alike contest, great food, and tequila! Our host is Edgar Gallego, news personality from KSDY, and entertainment will be provided by Manny Cepeda Orchestra and DJ La Voz. All proceeds benefit the critical services provided by Latin@x Services at The Center.
Bringing this celebration back is so important to our community and we are all looking forward to being together in a safe space with familia, to dance and celebrate our Latino/a/x culture. Our community has been craving to be together, and we can't wait to share space with you on June 24th!

Recently, one morning I walked into The Center's lobby to see one of our Latin@x Services clients who attends our support and discussion groups. Pachanga de Frida is so important to him that he came in person to reserve an entire table and three extra seats! He told me how powerful and impactful this event is for him that he had to come down and let me know in person. He is also excited to participate in the Frida look-alike contest and showed me the dresses he was preparing for himself and his friends to wear to honor Frida. He said, “You don’t know how much I’ve missed this event!” I was so proud to share this with our Latin@x Services department team and we all had tears in our eyes! It means so much to us to be able to provide such joy to our clients.

Pachanga de Frida is Saturday, June 24th, from 5-9pm in The Center’s Auditorium at 3909 Centre Street in Hillcrest. Standing room tickets are $20 presale, $30 at the door, or $500 for a table for 8 people. Tickets include all event festivities, two tacos and one drink per ticket. For more information, call 619.692.2077 or email latinos@thecentersd.org.

Veterans Wall of Honor Nominations Now Open

The Benjamin F. Dillingham, III and Bridget Wilson LGBT Veterans Wall of Honor recognizes LGBTQ veterans with ties to San Diego who served under anti-LGBTQ policies, preventing their ability to serve, and serve safety and openly, as well as those who have served after the ending of those policies. These veterans have taken the oath to serve our country and have done so honorably, and with distinction, acting as role models in advancing equality. The LGBT Veterans Wall commemorates these veterans’ lives in hopes that their courage, bravery and sacrifices will continue to inspire future generations.

The 2023 nomination form is now open until June 30, 2023. Please be sure to review the candidate criteria on our website prior to submitting a nomination.

EARN A REWARD FOR VOLUNTEERING
TO SAVE ENERGY

Help make California’s energy grid stronger, safer and more reliable for all Californians this summer – and get a reward for it too! The Power Saver Rewards program pays you for lowering your electricity use when energy is in high demand. When the temperatures rise, it pays to be flexible.

Here is how it works: On hot summer days, as more people use energy to stay cool, the electrical grid can become strained due to high demand. When this occurs, the statewide grid operator may call a Flex Alert or other grid emergency. As a result, the Power Saver Rewards program may be activated to help reduce energy use and strain on the grid.

If you are eligible and reduce your energy use during a Power Saver event between the on-peak hours of 4 p.m. – 9 p.m., you could receive a bill credit of $2.00/kWh. And the best part? The more energy you conserve, the more you can save! There are no penalties if you can’t conserve energy during an event, and you can opt-out of the program at any time.

If saving on your monthly energy bill, helping improve grid reliability and contributing to a cleaner environment sound good to you, the Power Saver Rewards program may be the right fit for your home. To learn more about this program, visit sdge.com/PowerSaver or call 1. 866. 291.9516.
