Kontirennanoron - Women Singing Precious Songs and Kahsenniyo Kick: Celebrating Indigenous History and Pride Month

Date: Thursday, June 22
Time: 8:30 to 10 a.m. (Gathering and Nourishment 8:30 to 9 a.m.; Program 9 to 10 a.m.)
Location: David Braley Health Sciences Centre Auditorium (2nd Floor)

In honour and celebration of both Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, the Indigenous Health Learning Lodge (IHLL) and the Department of Family Medicine (DFM) welcome you to join us for a morning of cultural sharing through song, storytelling and poetry. We will be graced by the voices of vocal group ‘Kontirennanoron’ (meaning Women singing precious songs) as they share Rotinonhsonni cultural teachings and songs of creation, water and sustenance. This will be followed by a performance by spoken word artist ‘Kahsenniyo Kick,’ who is deeply embedded in advocacy work across the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The IHLL and DFM are also looking forward to announcing the DFM Indigenous Health Committee and the Covenant to which we’ve committed, as well as a newly endowed Indigenous Health Fund to support our work together to strengthen Indigenous health in family medicine education, research and practice.

As part of our commitment to community giving, we will be collecting non-perishable food items that will be collectively donated to the Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg Food Bank in Hamilton. Other donation items are welcomed, such as hygiene items (toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene items, deodorant), pet food (cats and dogs), cleaning items, diapers and wipes, baking items (flour, sugar, oil, etc.) and canned and dry goods.

This will be a free, hybrid event, open to all staff, faculty, learners and community members. We encourage that where possible, attendees prioritize an in-person, embodied experience for this event and invite those that may not be able to join us in-person, to join us virtually. We are committed to removing any barriers to attending and we look forward to sharing in this experience together! Please register by June 15.

Site Director Announcements: Hamilton and Niagara

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of two new Site Directors in our program: Dr. Anjali Kundi for Niagara and Dr. Judy MacKinnon for Hamilton.

Anjali has been involved in leadership and teaching in McMaster’s Niagara Regional Campus for 10 years. Recent leadership and education roles include Director of Faculty Development (Niagara Regional Campus), Assistant Pre-Clerkship Director, Student Advisor, and family medicine preceptor to medical students and residents.

Anjali takes pride in making connections and building relationships that foster community and shares a deep commitment to McMaster’s mission to serve traditionally marginalized populations. A listener, supporter, and leader, she values sharing her experiences and skills with learners. Anjali is committed to supporting residency training and healthcare in the Niagara region in which she works and lives.

Judy brings five years of leadership experience as Education Coordinator at Stonechurch Family Health Centre where she has successfully supported the academic teaching unit’s training program, while also precepting residents and medical students in family medicine. Her expertise in postgraduate education will be highly valued across the broader Hamilton site.

Judy is committed to high standards in teaching, including promotion of a positive learning environment. A strong collaborator and respectful communicator, Judy has been an advocate for promoting robust residency education that contributes to excellence in patient care. We are confident that she will continue to make significant enhancements to our residency program.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming both Judy and Anjali to the Site Director role, effective July 1. We are excited to benefit from their leadership expertise and look forward to the positive impact they will make!

EDI & Anti-Racism

Anti-Oppression Workshop Series Recordings

We are half-way through a four-part anti-oppression series facilitated by Tejal Patel, an associate clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine. These sessions are intended to introduce and build upon foundational concepts in the field of equity, diversity and inclusion to allow participants to gain a better understanding of how positions of power, marginalization, privilege and oppression interact and contribute to structural inequalities.

Recordings of the first two sessions are available on the faculty portal and staff portal.
