Brooklyn Neighborhood News Update

May 16, 2023

The Clinton Triangle / Gideon Temporary Alternative Shelter Site Working Group is meeting on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 6PM. The meetings will always have a virtual component and may also be in-person when the members arrange it ahead of time. See related news item below.
The Brooklyn Climate Community is meeting this Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 7-8:30pm at The Chomp, 3200 SE Milwaukie Ave.

Every Friday regardless of whether there is school, from 1:30-2:30pm, the Groceries 4 Grout volunteers offer free groceries. The shopping-style pantry lets you choose from a variety of available items, often lots of fresh produce, canned goods, meat & dairy as they're available. The tables are set up just behind Grout School at 3119 SE Holgate Blvd. To learn more, email Groceries4Grout.

Next Monday, May 22, 2023, the Brooklyn Paddlers are doing an evening outing on the river, 6-8pm.  Put-in is TBD, email us for details.

Join your neighbors for trivia night at Mano Oculta, 1420 SE Powell Blvd, at 6:30pm on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Host duties have rotated, and your prior hosts are excited to see what they come up with!

This week's news

The next Brooklyn Action Corps General Meeting is Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 7pm.  The meeting will be held in-person at the Sacred Heart Villa, 3925 SE Milwaukie Ave. Portland, OR 97202,  and virtually as a Zoom meeting.

We should have an informative presentation by Oregon Shines on community solar projects.

We also elect a new board at this meeting. If you'd like to run for BAC Board, the
bylaws require that candidates must have attended either 2 board meetings or 1 board meeting and 2 general or committee meetings in the prior 4 months.
The Gideon Temporary Alternative Shelter Site / Clinton Triangle working group had four meetings last week, three with HAND and CEIC to work on the Good Neighbor Agreement and one with representatives of Mayor Wheeler, HAND, and CEIC.

I also got a copy of the current site plans via a public records request.

You can read my update, along with a summary of last week's meetings and links to everything, in this week's Gideon Shelter blog post.
Brooklyn volunteers and cleanup clients in action
Today, the homes in Brooklyn are 3.84 tons lighter.

This past Saturday, May 13, 2023, nineteen neighborhood volunteers put their backs into filling up two dumpsters of things that don’t promote joy, as well as saving items from the waste stream with recycling. Read more on the blog.

An investigation by ProPublica revealed the hazards of ever-longer freight trains doesn't just include potential accidents like the ones in East Palestine, Ohio. It includes hazards of railroad crossings that are closed for hours and isolate the communities on either side. Sound familiar?
Trains are still cool, though. The up-and-coming and obviously well-parented Lillian Karabaic, host of OPB's Weekend edition, covered the Oregon Heritage Rail Center for National Train Day on Saturday, May 13.
The second river outing by the Brooklyn Paddlers was last Thursday, May 11, 2023. We found a momma and poppa beaver. I took pictures of the equipment in the lagoon and told Abandoned America about them. They agreed it's cool!

We'll have another early morning outing this Thursday, May 18.

We're also going out in the evening, this Monday, May 22, 2023.

If you are interested in joining a Brooklyn-based group that will make regular outings to paddle on the river and take action to restore the neighborhood's river access,
please email us!
Have you reported an abandoned car, dumped trash, or other item to the city that hasn't been taken care of? That's what our Tuesday Problem Solvers sessions with the city are for.  If there's a problem you've reported which hasn't been taken care of in a reasonably timely manner, please email us!
If you are interested in working on making the railroad crossing at SE Milwaukie Avenue and Gideon Street more functional for our neighborhood and can make the time commitment, currently an hour or two a week, please contact the board.
