Armed Forces Week 19th - 24th June 2023

Armed Forces Week is a chance to celebrate our Armed Forces and the work they do. This annual event has two key days that remain unchanged every year - Reserves Day on the Wednesday and Armed Forces Day on the Saturday.

During the week we will be championing the Armed Forces community and supportive employers. There are lots of ways you can get involved too, find out how!

159 Regiment RLC in Nordic skiing competition

159 Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) deployed to Norway for three weeks to take part in the RLC Nordic Skiing Championships. The team drove from Canley to Norway via the Euro tunnel through France and Germany before the final leg through freezing conditions into the mountains of Norway, a total of nearly 900 miles!

A climb for charity!

University Royal Naval Unit Birmingham (BURNU) have chosen Fisher House UK as its charity for the year. Fisher House provides military patients and their families with a “home away from home” whilst their loved ones receive hospital care. 

A recent fundraising event, climbing Snowdon in fancy dress, started off their year of support.

RAF Reservists mobilise with Typhoons

Air Recruit Jackson and Air Specialist (Class 1) Mimnagh both benefitted from being mobilised on two separate Typhoon based exercises in February.

Jackson headed to Nevada on Exercise Red Flag and Mimnagh to Oman on Exercise Magic Carpet.

Midlands Reserve unit trains in Canada

In March nine British Army personnel from 37 Signal Regiment were deployed on a two week training exercise to Canada as part of a Canadian 5 Division annual Arctic Company Response Group validation activity. The aim of the exercise was to build relations with the allied forces, as well as to share knowledge on technologies and tactics employed by the Canadian Army.

2023 Westminster Award finalists

The 2023 CVQO Westminster Award finalists have been announced and include two Air Cadets from our region - one cadet from 395 (Stafford) Squadron RAFAC and one from 233 (Pershore) Squadron RAFAC. We would like to congratulate them on becoming a finalist and hope they enjoy their activity packed trip to Cornwall in the summer.

Two CCF cadets attend Snow Camp

Two cadets from Tile Cross Academy, the Cadet Expansion Programme component of Solihull School Combined Cadet Force (CCF), have worked their way through the Snow Camp programme, a national youth charity that uses snowsports to drive social mobility. The cadets were supported by funding from the Ulysses Trust and the Cadet Welfare Fund.

Stoke on Trent College awarded bronze

Stoke on Trent College is committed to the Armed Forces and recently signed the Armed Forces Covenant making a pledge to become a Forces Friendly employer.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze award was presented to Lisa Capper MBE, CEO and Principal at Stoke on Trent College, during a special event held on Monday 20th March.

Coventry Reserves welcome employers

West Midland RFCA held a joint event with Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce at the Army Reserve Centre in Canley to discuss how firms could work collaboratively with the Armed Forces.

The event heard how businesses can also encourage and support individuals who make up the Reserve Forces.

Staffordshire supports the Armed Forces 

In February Staffordshire’s council leaders joined together to reaffirm their commitment to the county’s Armed Forces community by re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant. They also want to encourage other organisations to pledge their support.

The Band of The Mercian Regiment will be accompanied by the Corps of Drums from Staffordshire & West Midlands (North Sector) Army Cadet Force and the Pipers of the Scots Guard Association (Manchester) in aid of the ABF.
