The Ascension of the Lord

Dear Friends,

Today, Thursday May 18 is Ascension Day.  The church keeps this feast 40 days after Easter and it marks Jesus' return into the heavens to dwell with God the Father.  Given that this day is important theologically and is part of the creeds of the church, we will transfer the feast to this coming Sunday, May 21.

We will consider the story of the Ascension and what it means for us.  Jesus is no longer constrained by time and place, meaning he can be in every time and in every place.  He can be alongside you and me.

St. Augustine's has long been a supporter of Flemingdon Food Bank.  The Groove Room raises funds for them through their proceeds and weekly, volunteers from St. Augustine's deliver food donations from Sobeys to the Food Bank.

We've recently learned that Flemingdon is in dire need of food and financial resources.  Use of the food bank is up dramatically and they have even turned people away for lack of food.

In response, St. Augustine's is inviting you to make a financial donation to Flemingdon between now and Pentecost, Sunday, May 28.  Please make your donation payable to St. Augustine's and earmark it for Flemingdon Food Bank.  St. Augustine's will issue donors a tax receipts for their contributions.

Pentecost
The festival day of Pentecost is fast approaching on May 28th.  For our drama, Megan is looking for some help.  Can you read a short scripture passage in a language other than English?  We're hoping to find a number of voices that can read Matthew 28:18-20 to create a cacophony of voices.  Please let Megan know if you're available to read.

Also, you might wish to wear red, orange, or yellow colours on Pentecost to match the colour of the tongues of fire.

GROOVE ROOM COFFEE HOUSE

Despite strong competition from the Maple Leafs, we had some diehard music and dessert fans show up last Friday for the Groove Room. We had a very young Elvis impersonator and a female singer with a lovely voice performing at the Groove Room for the first time. There was even dancing going on courtesy of 2 parishioners with great rhythm.

Come join us on Friday June 9th. Guaranteed that we won't have any competition from the Leafs.

We are looking for performers of all skill levels. Don't be shy - come on out and play. Invite any musical friends to come out and play. It is a very supportive venue that is especially kind to first time performers. For more information please contact Mike Rapson at info@saintaugustine.ca

Groove Rooms are presented on the 2nd Friday of the month. Our previously recorded Virtual Groove Rooms will continue to be available for viewing ONLINE.on our Groove Room You Tube channel.

God of peace and justice,
we pray for the people of Ukraine today.
We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons.
We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow,
that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them.
We pray for those with power over war or peace,
for wisdom, discernment, and compassion to guide their decisions.
Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear,
that you would hold and protect them.
We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
Amen.

From Archbishops Justin Welby and Stephen Cottrell
If you would like to support relief efforts for Ukrainian refugees, we commend to you this program through PWRDF and the National Anglican Church of Canada. CLICK HERE

Weekly Bulletin Announcements
Megan will be out of town May 29 to 31:  Every other year, the Diocese of Toronto hosts a clergy conference and after a COVID hiatus, the conference returns to an in person gathering this year.  Megan will be in Peterborough for the duration of the conference, but will respond to emergency calls and emails.  Please note that Bible Study on Monday and Wednesday the week of May 29 are both cancelled. Sunday services are not impacted.

Prayer Requests:  It is helpful for the prayer leaders to have names and requests in advance - please direct them to the church office early in the week if possible. Last minute requests may be added on Sundays to the list at the back of the worship space.

Church offerings:  Thanks to all who are keeping up with their regular offerings.  Please be advised that regular PAR donations are encouraged because they reduce accounting work for volunteers and provide a predictable stream of income. You can also donate online from our website, by clicking HERE

Egg Cartons and Used Postage Stamps: The food bank is always in need of empty egg cartons to replenish them with fresh eggs. Used postage stamps are collected to support the Leprosy Mission. Both items can be left on the table in the Narthex.

Spoken Eucharist Service:  The next 8:30 a.m. service will be held on Sunday June, 4th.

Church Office Closure:  The office will be closed on Monday, May 22nd for the Victoria Day long weekend.

Thank-you!
Thanks to Jamie, Ross, and Alison for their work this week.  Clean out work has begun in the old deacon's office.  A supply cupboard in the hallway has also been emptied.  This work is in preparation for the possibility of a Swedish Lutheran Church renting space from us this autumn.

Thanks to Mike and his crew for hosting the May Groove Room on Friday, May 12.  And thanks to Stephen and Alex who have been earning school volunteer hours by supporting the set up and take down at Groove Room.  You're helping us to make connections with the wider community and supporting the Flemingdon Food Bank in the process.
