2023 MFA Photography Thesis Exhibition

Body Breeze Earth presents the graduate thesis exhibitions of Jessica Hays and Erica McKeehen in Columbia College Chicago’s Photography Department. Jessica Hays presents pieces from two bodies of work, "The Sun Sets Midafternoon," which combines image, text, and video to explore climate grief and solastalgia through the lens of wildfire, and "Horizon Line," a monumentally scaled handmade artist book rooted in experiences of reverence and appreciation for the land while recognizing it as both open and divided concurrently.

Erica McKeehen (who performs as Greta-X) combines imagery from her long-term portraiture projects "Secret Mermaid" and "REVEAL," which profile McKeehen’s close friends and fellow burlesque performers and sex workers, Secret Mermaid and Kitty Tornado (respectively), alongside her own self-portraits in "Days of Rust," to present nuanced views of femme sexuality, autonomy, and experience.

"Bai Bautista-Buckingham and James Ross: Trust Visions" Exhibition

"Trust Visions" depicts the delirious optimism and haunting paranoia of being caught in delusions of grandeur. The lines that define this harsh reality soften and blur until all that’s left is blind confidence, a million good bad ideas, invincibility, a message from God, and a Birkin with a can of Red Bull and three lip glosses inside.

Bai Bautista-Buckingham and James Ross are recipients of the Pougialis Fine Art Award which is a yearly competition sponsored by the Art and Design department that offers promising fine art students at Columbia College Chicago an opportunity to study as an apprentice with an established artist of national and international standing for one semester, a cash award, and a two-person exhibition at The Arcade.

Through August 1

Shift: Music, Meaning, Context Exhibition

"Shift: Music, Meaning, Context" explores how music changes in form and interpretation as it moves across time, bodies, and place. Folk songs are used for propaganda, pop hits are deployed as tools of torture and cultural origins are erased – or reinvested – in particular songs, instruments, and genres. At the same time, music can also become a site of play, serendipity, and healing. The exhibition combines video, sound, and photography to transform the museum’s galleries into a unique choral mélange.

Through August 6
Museum of Contemporary Photography
600 S. Michigan Ave.
