So now, ladies and gentlemen, it is star time.
Are you ready for star time?

It is indeed a great pleasure to present to you at this particular time. National and internationally known as the hardest workin' man in retail. Thе star of our show, Mean Gene...
Thanks JB. Hello everybody!
Love you GVL, its good to be back in Gspeak. Before the band kicks things off and we start the email show, I’d like to say a few words.
It’s been almost a month since RECORD STORE DAY 2023 happened April 22nd . I want to take this chance to say how amazing it was, how absolutely supportive all you music collectors were to us and how unbelievably grateful I and all the team at Horizon Records are for the community we live in.
Just THANK YOU!

Now for a silly historic note. Quietly as we mopped up from RSD and rolled into May, I noticed, then forgot again, that May 1st marked the 20 year anniversary of Horizon Records moving to our current “new” location. Wow. Our new location is now 2 decades deep and moving on; cool! Makes me feel a tad old. That’s all I have to say about that.

The one thing that has never changed about the river of time and Horizon Records since 1975 is our enthusiasm about music and our mission to feature artists and releases we feel are great or crucial vs simply attempting to move tonnage of the latest pop thing. One need only scan our eclectic features just below to see evidence of this; from a long overdue re-issue of the super funky 1970’s masterpiece from Archie Shepp to a shout an pre-order listing for the upcoming City Of Gold by the unstoppable MOLLY TUTTLE and Golden Highway’s new one dropping in July (produced by equally unstoppable JERRY DOUGLAS yo!)

Lastly (finally) mark your calendars as Horizon Records with solid support of The BOHEMIAN CAFÉ jump into Jazz Fest mode and bring y’all 2 FREE CONCERTS on SATURDAY JUNE 3rd starting at 2pm right here. Check the City of Greenville link here for all the full details. It’s the first annual Greenville Jazz Festival and we are gonna do our part.

That’s it, phew! Thanks for sticking with us, be well, and come see us.
Peace,  gene

Hi friends!

Hoping all is well. The Vault Team has been working on a lot of cool stuff lately that I want to share with you guys.

As we’ve been curating the Vault’s deep catalog we’ve created a couple of new sections and genres in the store that I want you guys to be aware of.
First off there’s a new “Rockabilly,Doo Wop, 50’s” section that’s full of great stuff in mint condition. Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, an incredible line up of Doo Wop.

Secondly, we have what’s called the “Now Sound.” Exotica, Lounge, Moog and Surf! Plus other esoteric titles! This section is a must! Any Clara Rockmore fans out there??

There’s going to be a substantial Classic Rock acquisition hitting the New Arrivals and the racks this weekend. These albums always go fast, so get to the store if you’re in need!! All in pristine shape.
We’re working on something special when it comes to Jazz Vinyl to kick off the new Greenville Jazz Fest. Stay tuned!! It’s going to be good 😊.

As always, reach out if you need anything.

BELA FLECK, ZAKIR HUSSAIN, EDGAR MEYER
As We Speak
vinyl LP & CD
buy it here

Three titans of music and masters of their instruments (banjo, tabla & double bass) have gathered to make something new and beyond category; technically impressive but extremely tuneful and approachable at the same time.

“What I think is good about this quartet is that everybody has to stretch in the direction of the other people,” says Fleck. “To me, a collaboration where nobody changes is not a collaboration. It's a mashup. And there's nothing wrong with that. But I like a collaboration where I have to learn a bunch of new things from the other people. And in this case, I'm learning like crazy.” Read more

CALIFONE
Villagers
ltd ie vinyl LP & CD

Part experimental indie and part '70s soft rock, Califone's first record in three years finds creative force Tim Rutili reaching new levels of harmony, fragility, and confidence.  Part poet, part abstract painter, and always surrounded by a variety of hyper-talented collaborators (here including longtime cohorts Ben Massarella, Michael Krassner, Rachel Blumberg, and Brian Deck, as well as the likes of Nora O'Connor and Finom's Macie Stewart), Rutili has always excelled at luring listeners through elusive lyrics, flashes of shadows and images coming together in disarming unity.

ARCHIE SHEPP

These 1969 recordings (released 5 years later) combine Shepp's free jazz bonafides and a blend of blues and funk through an African lens, all in a big band setting. The all-star brass section, featuring James Spaulding and Charles Davis on sax along with trombonist Graham Moncur III lead the way on stand outs including "Back Back" "New Africa" and "Spoo Pee Doo." Crucially this includes the mind bending and universally revered track "Back Back" featuring Cedar Walton on keys. This Verve By Request LP features transfers from analog tapes and remastered on 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.

ZAHIA ZIOUANI & DIVERTIMENTO ORCHESTRA
Bacchanale
CD
buy it here

Formed 25 years ago by sisters Zahia and Fettouma Ziouani, the Divertimento Orchestra has found its place among the world’s great symphonic ensembles while developing an artistic model notable for its uniqueness and social engagement. Its repertoire ranges from the Baroque period to the music of our time, with an added focus on diversity and in particular the music of the southern part of Europe and of North Africa. Emblematic of that approach, this new recording juxtaposes celebrated symphonic works by Camille Saint-Saëns with the music of the southern Mediterranean that inspired him (traditional Arab and Berber music). Through her drive to make symphonic music accessible, she created the culturally-diverse Divertimento orchestra, based in her own Parisian immigrant neighborhood.

ANDERSON .PAAK
Malibu
ltd orange splatter vinyl LP

There's a fresh creative spirit that Paak brings to his music and assorted creative endeavors. You may know him as one half of throw-back R&B masters Silk Sonic, or one half of Stone's Throw collaboration NxWorries or maybe friend & mentor to young Jazz prodigies Domi & JD Beck. But really the white hot embers of his creative energy can be found in his four solo releases named for southern California beach communities; the most revered is this, his Malibu record. It's a fresh take on Hip-Hop flavored R&B and luckly it's back in print after being MIA for years. Do yourself a favor and check out his Tiny Desk Concert from the Malibu period. So good!
