LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

May 2023

Justice for Sexual Assault Survivors Act

It was a privilege for me to testify alongside Hollis Brown, 2022 Miss Wisconsin USA, at a Senate hearing last week in support of the “Justice for Sexual Assault Survivors Act,” which I authored to prevent a future backlog of untested sexual assault kits. Hollis is not only a Miss Wisconsin USA; she is also a sexual assault survivor, and a powerful voice who has focused her platform on survivor advocacy, and how to find strength after unimaginable trauma.

Supportive Care for Patients
The Door County Medical Center's Jenna Jennerjohn gave a very informative presentation last month on Transitional Care Management, which provides vital support for patients returning home, or to assisted living. Nurses act as care managers to help the patient through the healthcare system to make sure they receive the support they need to achieve the best health outcome possible.  Jenna participated in the Wisconsin Hospital Association's Quality Showcase in the State Capitol Rotunda.

Energy Tax Relief for Families

This week, my legislation to eliminate the sales and use tax on residential electricity and natural gas was heard in Senate committee.  Currently, this tax relief is available only during the colder months through April, and taxed for the rest of the year.  Wisconsin’s average residential energy rates are significantly higher than the Midwest and US averages, according to a 2022 Wisconsin Public Service Commission report.  Wisconsin’s energy taxes only add to this high energy cost burden, which is especially heavy for lower-income households.

Welcome Mishicot's O.H. Schultz Elementary!
Last week I had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Kliment and students from O.H. Schultz Elementary in Mishicot to the Senate Chambers in our State Capitol. These school visits are one of my favorite parts of this job, and the students always ask GREAT questions!

Congratulations, Bailey!
I was very proud last month to recognize Bailey Rikkola from Sevastopol High School as a Spectrum Scholar-Athlete. This honor includes a thousand-dollar scholarship award towards college expenses. Congratulations Bailey on your hard work and achievements!
