Dear People of Hope,

See the below note from Pat about an opportunity to connect and grow in faith this summer.  Reach out to her to help plan these meaningful conversations:
-----
Summer is coming! Some of our schedules may open up, and some of them may be more sporadic and full of interesting activities away. In either case, you are invited to join in a discussion group this summer at Hope (in person—but if anyone feels they can only come if we mask, that is fine too), a chance for community together and some spiritual discussions.  Brian McLaren is a pastor—formerly in this area—who planted the nearby Cedar Ridge Community Church, a prolific author, sought after speaker, and a part of the emerging Church movement, also known for his interest in post-modern Christianity. Author of about 24 books centered on the Christian faith, his latest has the intriguing title: Do I Stay Christian?  The Center for Action and Contemplation (among many other activities) produces podcasts, including “Learning How to See,” (led by Brian) and seasons 3 and 4 focus on his last book. Season 3 discusses that central question—both the yea and nay sides. Season 4 covers the issue of, if someone decides to stay committed to the faith, how can that life be best lived out without accepting the harmful elements of Christianity.

If anyone is interested, please get in touch and let me know the following:

1. Would you rather hear and discuss season 3 or season 4 based on the description above?
2. What would be good evenings or times on the weekend that you could meet?
3. Any thoughts about how often to meet? Once a week for the summer? Every other week?
4. Any other comments, questions, observations, or thoughts!

You can reach me at panoone@verizon.net or text or call me at 301-233-0714.

Celebrating Graduates in Worship
Sunday May 21

This Sunday in morning worship, we'll hear from and pray for Alex K, Naette L, and Matthew S-Z, three new doctors among us!  We'll also hear how God has been a part of their studies, their lives and the new things starting in their lives and careers this summer.
Humble Walk Graduation Gala
Monday May 22, 3-4:30pm
at St Andrew's Episcopal Church

The Humble Walk invites you to a Graduation Gala to celebrate the accomplishments of its seven graduating seniors. The celebration will be at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall on Monday, May 22, 2023 from 3-4:30 p.m.. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP to lutheran@umd.edu by May 15.
Pentecost Baptism, wear red
Sunday May 28, 10:30am worship

In a couple weeks, we celebrate the Holy Spirit with Pentecost Sunday.  We also celebrate the baptism of baby Vance B.  Pray for his family as they prepare for his baptism.  And plan to wear red, the color of fire, to celebrate the Spirit among us.
Blessing the Bus Journey
Sunday July 2, 10:45am after morning worship

Humble Walk alum and Hope member, Addie S, has bought a school bus and is refurbishing it into a mobile home.  She and Brandon plan to drive the bus around the country on a grand adventure.  Join Addie and Brandon to bless the bus as they set out on the journey in July.
9:30am Summer Worship at Hope
starting in June, accounting for the heat

Do you remember worship at Hope last summer? It was often hot, even with the AC running.  Turns out the AC wasn't working properly, and won't be working again this summer.  With Hope exploring selling the property, a costly repair doesn't make sense at this time.  Council has recommended some changes to make summer worship in person manageable.

In June and July:
  • Sunday worship will begin at 9:30am, when the air is a little cooler
  • Fans will be running
  • Cold drinks are welcome
  • AC will be running downstairs in the student lounge for people who need a break
  • Attendees are encouraged to wear weather appropriate clothing
  • Zoom worship will continue
Contact any member of council to learn more.  We'll reevaluate and plan for August, with the hope to return to 10:30am worship in time for UMD's return in the fall.
