Dowd Modern Graphic History Library Becomes Dowd Illustration Research Archive

Washington University Libraries changed the name of the D.B. Dowd Modern Graphic History Library to Dowd Illustration Research Archive. Named for D.B. Dowd, professor of art at the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, through the generosity of Ken and Nancy Kranzberg, the unique collecting area was established in 2007, and is devoted to twentieth-century American visual culture.

Artifacts & Fictions: Curated by Students in Illustration & Visual Culture

April 29-September 24, 2023 | John M. Olin Library, Ginkgo Reading Room

The Artifacts & Fictions exhibition presents works curated by students in the Master of Fine Arts in Illustration and Visual Culture (MFA-IVC) program. From comic development in the 20th century to depiction of American events through the art of illustration, the exhibition showcases many important sociocultural and aesthetic trends.

Carpet Replacement in Level 2 of Olin Library

A much-needed carpet replacement project is set to begin on level 2 of John M. Olin Library. Collections on level 2 will be inaccessible and items can be requested via Interlibrary Loan from May 24 through mid-August.

Gutenberg's Apprentice by Alix Christie

Wednesday, June 21 | 3:00-4:00 pm | Zoom

Join us for the June book club to discuss Gutenberg’s Apprentice by Alix Christie. Book club will begin by showing an original leaf of the Gutenberg Bible—the first book printed in the West—and discussing what the book gets right and wrong about history, followed by a discussion of Christie’s novel.

Announcing the Joseph D. Murphy Papers 

The Joseph D. Murphy Papers, now available for research in University Archives, show the work of local architect Joseph D. Murphy (1907–1995). A professor and dean of the Washington University College of Architecture, Murphy designed Olin Library and the Climatron at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Don't Call Her Shirley: My Month in WashU's Digitization Unit

The University Libraries' state-of-the-art camera The Shirley captures high-grade images of fragile primary sources. Practicum student Mike McHugh who worked at the Preservation and Digitization Unit writes, "Capturing images on The Shirley is like climbing to the top of the Statue of Liberty: there are a lot of steps involved, but it gives you an inside view of history that few people are fortunate to see."

Illustrated Poetry in the Hochschild Collection of Children's Books

The Henrietta Hochschild Collection of Children's Books contains many genres charting the development of children's literature. Danielle Ridolfi, a master's student in the MFA program in illustration and visual culture, writes about the illustrated volumes of poetry found in the Hochschild Collection.
