Celebrate Intergenerational Day today
June 1, 2023, Intergenerational Day in Canada, represents a chance to promote respectful, purposeful connection between students and older adults in their communities. The i2i Intergenerational Society, a group formed by schools across Canada to connect students and older generations within their community, created this day in 2000.

For older adults, intergenerational learning can break down generational stereotypes of younger people, improve their mental, physical, and social health, build an understanding of modern culture, and share stories. For young people, intergenerational learning can break down generational stereotypes of older adults, improve mental, physical, and social health, teach valuable life lessons, develop interest in pursuing careers involving older adults, and spread good will into the community.

The GrandPals Program is an intergenerational approach to learning, storytelling, and friendship between students and older adults. GrandPals creates, facilitates, and promotes school curriculum that integrates intergenerational experiences. The program promotes human dignity, honour, and anti-ageism through its program.

The new GrandPals website has launched for 2023: Browse the site to learn more about the program, the partnerships with schools, libraries, and non-profit organizations across the country, and how you can be an intergenerational leader in your community.

Survey on Social Isolation and Loneliness for Older Adults
The Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health is developing guidelines to support health and social service providers to recognize, assess and find ways to help address social isolation and loneliness among older people in Canada.

We have launched a national survey asking adults who are 65 and older to share their knowledge and insights of social isolation and loneliness. In particular, we are interested in:
  • Learning whether/how older adults see social isolation and loneliness as a health issue
  • Gauging the awareness of older adults to address experiences of social isolation and loneliness
We would greatly appreciate it if you would complete the survey (if you are eligible) and to share it within your organizations and networks. The survey should take 5-7 minutes to complete. The survey data will help inform the guidelines as well as how we share them.

AGE-WELL
agewell-nce.ca
Earlier this year, AGE-WELL launched a new public webinar series built around eight Challenges Areas that will enable us to “move the dial” when it comes to supporting older adults and caregivers in Canada―and achieving social and economic impact.

Tech for Health: How AgeTech Can Help Promote Healthy Lifestyles and Wellness (webinar)
Date: June 6, 2023, 2 – 3 p.m. EDT

Speakers: Andrew Sixsmith, PhD, Director of the Science and Technology for Aging Research (STAR) Institute, Simon Fraser University; Patricia Hewston, HBSc.Kin, MScOT, OT Reg (Ont), PhD, Research Associate at the GERAS Centre for Aging Research, Dept. of Medicine, McMaster University; Harmehr Sekhon, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, McGill University and McLean Hospital (Harvard Medical School Affiliate); and Jennifer Campos, PhD, Associate Scientific Director, AGE-WELL (Moderator).

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be challenging. Only 1 in 3 older Canadians gets the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week (Canadian Health Measures Survey: Activity monitor data, 2018-2019). Almost 1 in 5 Canadian seniors has experienced emotional distress in the past year, which they found difficult to cope with on their own (Canadian Institute for Health Information. How Canada Compares: Results From the Commonwealth Fund’s 2021 International Health Policy Survey of Older Adults in 11 Countries. Ottawa, ON: CIHI; 2022). Innovative AgeTech solutions can help address these challenges by offering a way to track, monitor and improve physical and mental health, while empowering older adults to take control of their well-being. Webinar participants will hear about:
  • Technologies and services that can help people develop and maintain healthy behaviours
  • Important factors that contribute to health outcomes
  • Wearables, apps and other innovative solutions that are in the pipeline – or already on the market.

Preventing, Recognizing, and Reporting Abuse and Neglect in Long-Term Care (eLearning course)
Have you taken the Orientation course on abuse prevention in long-term care, "Preventing, Recognizing, and Reporting Abuse and Neglect in Long-Term Care", from the Ontario CLRI?

This course is available at no cost to support new and existing team members in fulfilling the Ministry of LTC’s training requirements. Understanding how to prevent abuse and neglect is a critical skill for LTC team members as they care for residents from a position of power and trust. Equipping team members with this skill and preparing them to recognize and report abuse allows Ontario LTC homes to better protect their residents and uphold their policies. By taking this course, team members will learn, at their own pace, the importance of following protocol in situations of abuse or neglect to ensure the safety of residents. Visit our eLearning course.
