Ahoy hoy!

Data analysis acceleration is critical to democratizing access to the deep ocean. We can increase data collection and training, however, if that data, especially visual data, continues to sit on hard drives on shelves, unseen or unanalyzed, we only contribute to the existing data bottleneck. Ocean Discovery League is proud to be a co-principal investigator on the NSF Convergence Accelerator grant, Ocean Vision AI (OVAI). This multi-million dollar program is working to utilize machine learning to dramatically accelerate the analysis of ocean visual data.

The paper "Designing Ocean Vision AI: An Investigation of Community Needs for Imaging-based Ocean Conservation" was recently presented at the Human-Computer Interaction Conference CHI 2023 and gives background into the design and needs for this program.

This month, we also hosted several capacity-building workshops at the DOOS Annual Conference and heard excellent feedback from the global deep ocean community on their needs for ocean exploration. I will be presenting some new findings related to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) at the JETZON monthly conference on May 25; please sign up!
