VHS TRACK & FIELD TAKES FIRST PLACE IN MANY RACES AND BREAKS SCHOOL RECORDS AT REGIONALS

Courtesy of VHS Coaches - It was a beautiful, sunny, weekend at the Region Meet VI Track and Field Meet in Fairbanks, and boy were the Bucs ready for this week’s competition. The boy’s team took 1st place overall with a whopping 131 team points, and our small but mighty girl's team took second with 67 team points.

The Bucs also saw three new school records set in three events. Dillon Fowler had a flawless run in the 110m and set a new VHS record with a scorching time of 16.51. With a combo of speed and perfectly placed hand-offs, the girl's 4X100 relay team of Anika Palomar, Kelsey Prax, Destiny Day, and Izzy Kizer set a new VHS record with a time of 54.20, and the boy's 4X800 team of Jason Smilie, Rafe Caruthers, Gavin Morris, and Barrett McCumby set a new record with a blistering time of 8:55.50, beating their competition by 300 meters.

MADELINE O'NEIL RECOGNIZED WITH SILENT SERVANT AWARD

Previous Valdez High School student, Madeline O'Neil, now a senior in Moses Lake, Washington, was awarded a prestigious award after nomination from her VHS counselor. 
Maddie, shown above with her plaque, also received a $500 award. She had no idea she was nominated for her act of service she worked so hard on here in Valdez, raising money to acquire a specialized wheelchair-accessible family vehicle for our own Valdez Wadsworth family. Read more HERE

ALIY ZIRKLE WINS SEASON VALDEZ HALIBUT DERBY TICKET
Valdez Fish Derbies runs several Facebook giveaways prior to the fishing season. Last week, Aliy Zirkle commented on the Valdez Fish Derbies post and won a season ticket for the Valdez Halibut Derby. Later this year, Valdez Fish Derbies will give away a season ticket on their Facebook page. KVAK Radio will also give a season ticket for Halibut and another season ticket for halibut during Tourism Week June 12th through 16th.

DIVISION OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RELEASES SPRING FLOOD UPDATE

The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) is actively responding to flooding in communities on the Yukon River, Kuskokwim River, Glenallen, and other areas of the state.

Red Cross damage assessment team reports 2 homes with major damage, 5 minor. The Copper Valley Community Library basement/crawlspace has water in it and Alaska Heritage Emergency Network is supporting their efforts to obtain fans to dry it out. DOT&PF continues to work with Granite Construction to install culverts along Moose Creek to address water overtopping the Glenn Highway.

LEGISLATURE PASSES GOVERNOR DUNLEAVY'S CARBON OFFSET LEGISLATION

Senate Bill 48, Governor Mike Dunleavy’s carbon offset legislation was passed by the Alaska Legislature following a successful floor vote in the Alaska House of Representatives. SB 48 establishes a statewide carbon offset program within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). That means a business or entity that produces carbon dioxide can offset those emissions by buying credits generated by nature-based projects on State land. VALDEZ HALIBUT DERBY OPENS THIS SATURDAY

Jeremy Smith, 1st Place Winner of the 2022 Valdez Halibut Derby

The Valdez Halibut Derby kicks off this Saturday and features a $10,000 cash Grand Prize for the largest halibut, $3,000 cash for 2nd place and $1,500 for 3rd place. CITY OF VALDEZ 2023 ROAD CONSTRUCTION SEASON UNDERWAY

Construction has begun on Whalen Avenue and will continue throughout this summer.
West Egan Drive is now open to all traffic. The detour through St. Patrick Subdivision will no longer be in use.
No road closures are scheduled for West Egan Drive until later this season when paving begins.
If any unexpected road closures become necessary, please follow all detours, traffic control signs or flaggers.
The City of Valdez thanks you for your patience during this year’s road construction season while we update our city’s infrastructure.
If you have any questions or concerns with the upcoming Pavement Management projects,
please go to the City’s paving website valdezpavementrehab.com.

NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE

Take notice that on April 24, 2023, the City of Valdez filed in the Valdez Superior Court, Third Judicial District, State of Alaska, a certified copy of the Foreclosure List for the City of Valdez for the tax years 2022 and prior years with a Petition for Judgment of Foreclosure.
