Growing Up

Dear Parents,

Year 1 spoke so eloquently in their assembly this morning, demonstrating their courage and excellent presentation skills at a very early age. Their play reflected on the mature themes of looking after the natural world, internationalism and sustainability- well done Year 1!

Year 6 had great fun at their Year 7 Social Evening this week, ready for their next step. They were super ambassadors for the school, informing the new Year 7 children about their experiences with the specialist teachers already from the Senior School. Year 6 welcomed another new member into the class this week, just in time for the residential trip next week.

Year 3 represented the school perfectly today at the Lancashire Science Festival. They performed keyhole surgery, analysed fingerprints, explored the Sun and loved dressing up as a surgeon, hopefully inspiring some of them to become doctors or scientists when they grow up!

Nursery

This week, the Ducklings have been participating in activities focussed on the story 'Dear Zoo,' both indoors and outdoors.

In the Butterflies Class, we have been exploring the topic of Vehicles. The children have enjoyed exploring mark making on their pictures, creating sounds such as "beep beep," and singing the song 'The Wheels On The Bus.'

The Nursery Team

Reception

In our numeracy lessons, we have been learning to share a set number of objects equally between 2, 3 and 4 groups. The children spotted that when they shared the objects between just 2 groups, the answer was the same. "It's a double!" the children shouted.
We have also been busy sewing butterflies and flowers using a running stitch. We are now looking forward to decorating them.

Miss Allen and Mrs Walsh

Year 1

It has been an exciting week this week as the children have been working hard to make their reading fluent for their assembly this morning and remember when to speak! This is a huge responsibility for them and they performed very impressively in front of their families.

The children have carried on weeding the flower beds, ready to put in their sunflower plants.

In Computing, the children have been creating and changing scenes on Scratch Junior using their coding skills.

Year 2

A busy week in Year 2 thinking about the changes in the weather with a focus on sun safety.

In PSHE, we thought of ways to stay safe and one of our tasks was to create a poster to tell people how to stay safe in the sun. Our posters will be put up around school to remind everyone to wear a hat, put on sun cream and keep drinking plenty of water.

We are also continuing our Art lessons on totem poles- well done to Luca and Carter for making their own for homework.

Mrs Bleasdale
Year 3

Year 3 made the most of the weather this week, getting around the school grounds looking for ways in which we can environmentally improve the school site- keep your eyes peeled for our top tips!

In Science, we explored how forces can be balanced and unbalanced, seeing what happens when a force is unbalanced and the effects it can have on an object.

In English, we have been reading 'Escape From Pompeii.' We used this to write our own version of the story and write a poem about a volcano.

Year 4

Year 4 have been learning about the dangers of electricity in Design Technology, and learning how to make a complete circuit in Science.
We have moved onto the Time topic in Mathematics. There are lots of different parts to think about including 'past' and 'to' as well as understanding how the hands work on an analogue clock.
Our new English topic has been giving us great opportunities to develop our discussion skills. Which would you prefer and why, a boat or hot air balloon?

Mrs Briggs

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have designed posters encouraging pupils and staff to bike, walk, scoot, bus or car share. The results were both colourful and informative and will be displayed around school as part of our carbon neutral plan.

During our Design Technology lesson, we made frameworks for the garden using square lashings. Our frameworks can be made into lots of different structures.

In Science, we researched and drew life cycles including lots of information about gestation, reproduction and growth. The children chose a wide variety of mammals, amphibians, retiles and insects.

Mrs Whitaker

Year 6

The children have been planting and growing this week as part of the Green Flag Award Scheme. The Year 6 focus has been on healthy living, linked to their Science topic of Healthy Bodies. The children have experienced the psychological and wellbeing benefits of growing plants to include herbs and fruits. Well done to William, Elle and Leila for nurturing their impressive tomato plants from a seed.
In Science, the children were able to identify the main muscle groups then think of specific exercises that would increase blood flow to each one when exercised. Well done to Joe, Sadie and Evie-Mae for describing the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles.
Finally in Art, the children finished creating their wonderful hats inspired from famous artists. Well done to everyone for including a 3D element to their design to include Rubik's cubes, butterflies and flowers- great skills!

Mr Avis and Mr Rice

Achievement Assembly- Congratulations to all our winners!
Eco News

Thank you to all who have donated plant pots to school. These donations allow our children to work in the garden and learn about our wonderful outdoors whilst reusing unwanted plastics.

Mrs Smith

This week, Year 3 have been sharing their tips for being eco-friendly:

  • Water plants more with the weather warming up.
  • Make sure to recycle and put litter in the correct bins.
  • Walk, cycle or scoot to school rather than drive in this nice weather.
  • Keep a watering can outside to collect rainwater and use that rather than tap water.

Sports Round Up

AKS Prep pupils enjoyed a selection of cricket fixtures this week with our U9 and U11 squads taking to the field of play.
AKS welcomed St Mary's Hall to Lytham for 2 cricket fixtures, one softball and one hardball. In our hardball fixture, AKS put the visitors into bat first. The visitors made a very good score and set AKS a target to reach. In glorious sunshine, AKS went into bat and set about reaching the target. Despite their efforts, the team were unable to reach the score required and St Mary's Hall were victorious.
In the softball fixture, both squads made use of our new flexi-wicket and played an enjoyable match with runs, wickets, and catches for both sides. It was great to see so many boys and girls enjoying the afternoon.
The Year 4 children were in action in the Wyre and Fylde Striking and Fielding event held at AKS. With the children set numerous challenges across a variety of sports, team AKS enjoyed the afternoon's activities with lots of smiles and laughter along the way. With team spirit in full flow, the children helped and encouraged each other, coming 4th out of 10 schools.
Today saw our Year 6 budding Tennis stars, Sam and Isaac, testing themselves at the AJIS Tennis Competition held at King's School Chester- well done to both boys.

Mr Moretti
