Professor Wilferd Madelung (1930-2023)
It is with great sadness that we note the death of our friend and colleague, noted scholar Professor Wilferd Madelung.

During his academic career, spanning more than 65 years, Professor Madelung made major contributions to many aspects of early and medieval Muslim history and thought. With particular reference to religious schools and movements in early Islam, his studies, based on a vast array of primary sources, have enriched the discipline’s understanding of almost every major Muslim movement and community – not only early Imami Shi‘ism and the later developments of Twelver, Ismaili and Zaydi Islam but also the lesser known aspects of Sunni, Khariji and the Mu‘tazili schools of theology and philosophy.

Ismailis in History and Myth

This short film features IIS Director Emeritus Dr Farhad Daftary on the topic of myths perpetuated about Ismailis and how modern scholarship is able to challenge them due to manuscripts held in our collection.

This first episode forms part of a new series from the Ismaili Special Collections Unit (ISCU) and the Department of Communications and Development (DCD), which premiered at the Aga Khan Centre in late April. The series will showcase items of historical importance held at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, and highlight their contemporary relevance today.

IIS Special Collections: A Journey along the Silk Road through Manuscripts and Coins
In this livestream, join Naureen Ali (Ismaili Special Collections Unit, IIS) as she explores the story behind heritage materials from IIS special collections and two items from the Aga Khan Museum’s collection. Items in this journey include manuscripts, rare books and coins that connect with different areas around the Silk Road.

From rare books printed in 16th and 17th centuries such as the Latin translations of al-Qānūn fī al-ṭibb (The Canon of Medicine), The Itinerary of Benjamin of Tudela and Kitāb al-manāẓir (Book of Optics) to a manuscript of Ta’rīkh-i jahān-gushā (History of the World-Conqueror) copied in the 13th century as well as an illuminated Qur’an manuscript copied in the 19th century, this live webinar of special collection items explores the story behind these objects and their connectedness with each other.
