Dear <<First Name>>,

I had a wonderful three days in Ottawa attending the Annual Meeting of Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for Local Government.

These meetings offer an important opportunity for leadership from coast to coast to discuss shared priorities, strengthen collaboration, reaffirm our commitment to supporting local governments, and work together to make life better for all Canadians and build on our ongoing work.

To create positive change, we need to continue the strong partnerships with all orders of government: Federal, Provincial/Territorial, Municipal and Indigenous.

Happy Pride Month 2023! 🏳️‍🌈

This month we stand in solidarity with our 2SLGBTQIA+ family, celebrating love and diversity in our neighbourhood. 2SLGBTQIA+ people are invaluable to our communities and deserve to express their identities without fear. Let us join hands to stand up against hate and bigotry, and build a more inclusive place for everyone.
Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

British Columbians invited to help shade anti-racism legislation

People are encouraged to share their thoughts through an online questionnaire about how government can best address systemic racism.

The information gathered will help inform new legislation that will hold government accountable for addressing systemic racism within its programs and services, and to provide supports for those who have been negatively impacted.

The questionnaire is available in 15 languages and will remain open until Sept. 30, 2023: https://feedback.engage.gov.bc.ca/379139?lang=en

B.C. advances fire-risk education, public education to save lives

To help educate people about proper smoke-alarm use and reducing fire risks, which will save lives and protect first responders, B.C. has announced an investment of $1.6 million in partnership with the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit (BCIRPU).

“We are taking action to overturn the alarming trend of increasing fire-related deaths in our province,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Once a fire starts, people have very little time to get out of their home safely, making a working smoke alarm a critical tool for saving lives. I’m urging everyone to test their smoke alarms at least once every six months to keep their home and family safe.”

More supports to help people prepare for in-demand careers

The B.C. government is funding Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning Pathways with an investment of $3.8 million.

The Pathways programming is intended to support people in getting the pre-requisites they need to access high-priority programs, including in the areas of health care, early childhood education, skilled trades and technology.

This work is in addition to the variety of tuition-free Adult Basic Education and English language learning programming available throughout the province.

Students, employers benefit more co-op, internship, on-the-job learning

As the Province partners with 13 of B.C.’s public post-secondary institutions, people will have access to work-integrated learning opportunities, such as co-ops, internships, practicums and community-service-learning opportunities.

This investment is part of the StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan, which will give thousands of people the skills and opportunities they need to thrive and employers an improved ability to find the talent they need.

“Work-integrated learning helps future workers access the hands-on experience they need to launch their careers,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “These placements give people valuable opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world settings and benefit employers by having workers who they train and can become potential new employees.”
