‘HEAD’ Lines

Awarding Attendance

Dear Parents/Carers

You will not be surprised that student attendance is the topic of this week’s ‘HEAD’ Lines. It is a topic that I and the school quite rightly communication with you on regularly.

The evidence of how important attendance is to student success at school is unequivocal. The more often they are here the better they will do!

Students who attend school more than 95% of the time are more than double as likely to achieve their potential than those with an attendance below 90%.

The school continues to put a significant focus on good student attendance and it’s pleasing to see that the efforts of all the students and staff is being recognised.
This week we have been recognised as being in the top 25% of schools nationally for attendance in the spring term (between Christmas and Easter).

We continue to think of ways in which we can support and encourage good attendance. You will be aware that recently we have introduced our 100% attendance cards. Students gain a stamp on their card (similar to a coffee shop reward card) for every week where they attend for 100% of the time. If they gain a stamp they can jump to the front of the lunch queue on their assembly day each week. If they manage to collect all their stamps for a half term they will be rewarded at the end of that half term.

Thank you for you continued support in making sure good attendance continues to be valued.

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

Regards
Russell Stevens
Headteacher

Year 8 visit Sparsholt College
The whole of year 8 ventured to Sparsholt College today for their annual ‘Futures’ event. Students got a taste of a variety of courses including: Aquatics, tree felling, climbing, thermal imagery, sport and equine studies.

They also got to explore the Sparsholt zoo seeing red pandas, lemurs, porcupines and meerkats.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.

We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.

This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.
