Dear colleagues,

As we come to the end of another school year, I hope you are well and looking forward to some of the enjoyable summer activities we all remember from our own school days. Fingers crossed that this nice warm weather continues!

The 2022-23 academic year has been a busy one as we reinstate some of our pre-Covid activities and add new ones.

Last half term we welcomed our newest cohort of Wheeler students into college for their second induction day, which saw them learning Welsh, thinking about how they can improve the planet and climbing on the low ropes (see pictures below).

They will join us, along with our Year 10 Wheelers, for a four-night residential course here later this month. We will also say goodbye to our Year 13 Wheelers, who graduate from the programme on June 21. We wish them all bright futures and hope the programme has been helpful to them in finding the way ahead. You can read one of our graduating students' testimony in the box below.

We also ran Outdoor Education days for seven schools in the Student Alliance. The initiative, introduced to help students for whom regular school attendance has become a challenge, involves a combination of low and high rope activities, and we have now completed 13 since September with one more planned before the end of term. We are keen to assess the impact of these days on students, so if you took part we will be in touch soon asking if you have seen any difference in their attitudes to school or their attendance levels. We also plan to run them again next year so keep your eyes peeled for details at a later date.

In April we were delighted to see so many of you at the PLG networking breakfast. Under the Teaching Alliance umbrella, we also held a Leading for Impact course, a Dance SSSG, a session called PE for non-PE teachers and Active Classrooms, which saw teachers learn how movement can help students concentrate during lessons. If you are unsure whether to book on a course, here are some words from a recent attendee that might encourage you: "The Leading for Impact course was inspirational. Within minutes, the facilitator had empowered us all to think about the kind of leader we aspire to be and the times we have felt successful and valued on our own journeys to leadership. The delivery of the content modelled perfectly the message of 'Leading with Love' and left me with lots more avenues to explore." This half term, our courses include Tough Conversations and Advanced Coaching and we are facilitating SSSGs in dance (online), food & nutrition and design, engineering & technology. See the diary below for dates and venues. You can book courses through the College Events page on www.wellingtoncollege.org.uk. For everything else please email the team on  WCLA@wellingtoncollege.org.uk.

There will be an online PLG meeting at 4pm on June 21 and we hope to see lots of you there. We will also have a stand at the Festival of Education here at Wellington College on July 6 and 7 so do come by and say hello. You can buy tickets at educationfest.co.uk.

Wishing you, your staff and pupils a restful and enjoyable summer break.

Best wishes,
Paul
A Wheeler student's experience

Xander Payne from Archbishop McGrath School in Wales says: “The Wheeler Programme has given me a massive push to go where I want to go, especially the coaching sessions; these are my goals and now I need to work towards them. I met so many new people, and to have an experience that is so completely different from my natural school life has been eye-opening. I’m thinking of doing psychology at university but the experience of being on the camera at Sky Studios has made me want to keep doing that, even if it is just as a hobby. I thought I would get a lot out of this and I have got so much good advice and direction. It has helped me become a more confident person, and more driven to do what I want to do. I’m going to miss coming here, I’ve made so many friends, and it feels less stressful than school.”
