How can we lower the huge shelter intake numbers?

First - thank you all so much for believing there is a solution and signing up for the newsletter. Many of you are already familiar with the work Reunion Rescue has done over the years by pulling high risk dogs from death row and distress situations. Many of these dogs were suffering from an illness that caused their owner to relinquish at animal control facilities because they couldn't afford a huge vet bill to cure their pet.

This week's tip - Reunion Rescue's amazing herbal heartworm cure

Dogs at Reunion Rescue have been cured of illness and diseases like high heartworm positive infestation with our herbal tincture you can order from Amazon. That's right! For only a few cents over $10.00 you can cure or prevent heartworms. We've done just that. Here's a photo of BeBe who survived Austin Animal Center where they'd given her a death sentence after being beaten with a baseball bat.

I pulled her and boarded her at the horror house Spindletop. BeBe survived Spindletop and she was still infected with heartworms when I retrieved her from Montgomery County. I got her on a raw diet and started the herbal dosing immediately. A few months later when BeBe was healthy enough, I took her in to be fixed and had them perform a heartworm test. She tested negative with flying colors.

This is one of the few stories we can share with our local communities and help pet owners with healthy options that don't break the bank. And even more importantly, saves the life of their companion without the heartbreak of leaving their dog at a high kill shelter to die alone.

Many people are skeptical of alternative methods, although herbal and homeopathic remedies have been successfully healing people and animals for hundreds of years. My suggestion regarding heartworm treatment is to try the herbal plan suggested by Bandit's Buddies linked to Reunion's Health page while undergoing the conventional plan which takes 4 to 6 months. What have you got to lose but a bunch of nasty heartworms?

I ran across the story of Chunk whose story has amazed millions of people. Bakersfield Strays and sister group R.A.D. Rescuing Abandoned Dogs are doing some amazing work. This is a boots on the ground effort in Bakersfield, California saving dumped dogs and other animals. Read their story and be inspired. We can all help change the world, one dog at a time.

R.A.D. Rescuing Abandoned Dogs in Bakersfield, Calfornia

OUR MISSION… IS TO C.A.R.E.

Our vision is that every animal has a safe home and Kern County, specifically Bakersfield, becomes known again for its incredible agriculture. KINDNESS – We strive to be kind.

We are trying to end this crisis in Bakersfield through our coalition of rescues focused on C.A.R.E. through Collaboration, Awareness, Resources, and Education.

Bulleted list of reasons dog are dumped:
  1. Can't afford food
  2. Huge vet bills
  3. Landlord
  4. Not enough time for pet
  5. Behavior
  6. Unwanted litters
Reunion Rescue has some answers to share with you. This is just a starting point, but will be revisiting these options in upcoming newsletters.

Food first: did you know Americans spend over 50 billion dollars on pet food? It's a giant industry and much of this is destroyed when returned or outdated. Reunion Rescue is in touch with local pet stores and pet food companies to utilize these resources with fellow rescues and financially strapped pet owners. We'll be offering newsletter subscribers ideas to orchestrate food donation programs in your communities to keep companion pets in their homes and out of the shelters.
Vet bills: This is a huge bone of contention with yours truly. In fact, I have a clause in my adoption contract that stipulates the adopter call me first before ever visiting a vet. Most issues can be dealt with successfully with homeopathic remedies, diet and herbal supplements. Believe me, I've got thousands of healthy dogs and cats to prove the point. You saw BeBe's heartworm story cured with herbal tincture. Imagine dosing your dog with herbs instead of toxic Ivermectin. Reunion Rescue's Health Page is filled with healthy resources to treat everything from an acl tear to kennel cough. Our Facebook Page Home Remedies to Heal Animals was established for anyone to post any animal issue and receive a holistic cure suggestion. And you can always shoot me an email at doggirl@reunionrescue.com.
Landlord: Make that dog or cat your companion animal. Form on Reunion website. Just have your doctor sign and take to local animal control for a medallion and certification.
Not enough time: Dogs are den animals. Crate train and Kong train the pet. Did you animal folks know rescues can buy Kongs for $1? These have been a life-saver at Reunion Rescue for a good long time. The dog gets a full upper body workout then naps. The training on our website done correctly insures you'll never need another toy. That's a promise.
Behavior: First on the list is this amazing product. Animal Relief Formula is what I've been using with miraculous results for dogs coming in with horrible trauma and abuse. Another product I use from the same distributor Southern Herbs is Emergency Stock flower essences. It is the go to instead of Rescue Remedy. Just a daily squirt into the water bowl and it energizes every time the dog or cat takes a drink. Calms the body and lowers stress levels. Benefit - buy the stock and you can make up your own bottles, more bang for your buck. These are only two supplements I use with more suggestions to come. I am a firm believer in a good trainer, but also reserve obedience class until the body is healed.
Unwanted litters: And this is where all of the previous suggestions come into play. First, you signed up for the newsletter and my promise to organize with you rescue folks and share the resources that I've used to save and rehab dogs all these years. All of the previous bulleted reasons people relinquish along with suggestions to address the problems bring us to the head of the snake, the spay/neuter problem.
It's worse than ever and rescues cannot keep up.
By implementing some of these ideas in your community, you are building a relationship with its pet owners. Why not start that food program for instance. With generous donations from pet stores and food companies, you can offer a three month supply in trade for that spay or neuter. A local dog trainer donating a free behavior class for spay/neutered pets.
There are many ways we can address this huge problem in our own communities. It won't happen overnight, but with a little strategizing, we can do this, together. The old Reunion Rescue motto, saving the world, one dog at a time.
What can we do right now? Easy. Start today by sharing a dog in need on your Facebook page. What better way to help animals in death row shelters or strays than using social media? The photos on Instagram and TikTok are so powerful and can save that one dog. We rescue groups can help each other and the animals by posting on our pages. Nothing is more gratifying than seeing a rescue group helping another group help dogs. One last little thing...we have a happy new beginnings Facebook page Green Flash at Sunset where we love to post freedom rides, adoptions, healing journeys...all the good stuff. The dream is to someday make this page bigger than the sharing death row dogs pages. Who's with me?

So how are we supposed to do all this stuff?

We're just a group of volunteers. Some of us work full time. We have families. How can we do all of this hard rescue work with no help? It's as easy as a HANDSHAKE!
Handshake is an organization with links to every school in the country. Most of these students are looking for internships to add to their resumes. And everybody wants to help dogs, right? They get experience in managerial, tech, social media capacities to help in career search and you get free labor. A win/win all the way around.

Sometimes we rescue animals no lucky enough to be born a pit bull.
The drive is quite beautiful with lots of green from the rain on my weekend drive out to visit the Bakersfield 4. However, there's a downside to it all. A few weeks ago I saw a lone turtle slowly making his way across the busy highway. It was in my rearview and so many cars were speeding up and down the highway, his chances for survival seemed slim. I did what I always do when I see a dead animal. I crossed my heart and said a little prayer for his journey over.

Then on my daily nature hike with one of the rescue dogs, I stopped and looked down at the running stream below. There swimming along was another lone turtle, oblivious to it all. That taught me a lesson. To try and think about the happy moments like this one.
