A few weeks ago, Tony Weiger asked me if I wanted to play golf with him in the Church of God Golf Fellowship. The Church of God Golf Fellowship is an event Tony started about 25 years ago as a platform for people from all over the United States to enjoy a time of fellowship using golf. The event is held on one of the many Robert Trent Jones golf courses scattered across Alabama. I told him I was not a good golfer. He said my skill level does not matter because it is designed to be fun and fair for everyone. So, reluctantly I agreed. I did not want to be a handicap to anyone with my poor playing skills. I nervously showed up Thursday morning with a bag of clubs I knew very little about and some balls I had found. We all gathered for a time of devotion and then introductions. I met a group of other players there from Indiana as well as players from Alabama. Past events have drawn up to 65 players from six different states. By the end of the day, I had met new friends, had fellowship with the other players and had the most fun I had ever had playing golf. Tony has designed an event with several types of scrambles and matches that are fun for experienced players while allowing novices, like myself, to participate and contribute to our team. Next year I am signing up and I hope to see you there as well.
