Network Updates & Announcements

Collaborative ECR publication and writing retreat:

Last week (1-2nd June) we hosted a two-day writing retreat for our ECRs at beautifully sunny Borwick Hall in Lancashire. The event was centred around writing a collaborative, interdisciplinary ECR-led article on the future of indoor air quality. It was a productive, engaging and interesting experience. Despite some travel chaos, many of us were able to attend in-person, and those who were not able to make it joined hybrid working sessions online. The working sessions were supported by Ruth Doherty, Zongbo Shi, and Anna Mavrogianni. It was wonderful to meet everyone and we look forward to seeing how this collaborative work will continue to progress in the next few months.

Call for Evidence - HSE

The UK HSE (Health and Safety Executive) is initiating a Regulatory Management Options Analysis (RMOA) to examine exposure of the public to formaldehyde in indoor settings.

In addition to articles that have the potential to release formaldehyde, HSE are interested to understand the levels of formaldehyde that can be generated in indoor settings from processes which can release formaldehyde such as cooking, use of candles and indoor domestic combustion such as woodburning stoves and ethanol fires. This call for evidence aims to gather information on formaldehyde emissions / concentrations in indoor environments (homes, schools, offices, public places) and evidence that will support the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) with the preparation of this RMOA.

The call for evidence is now live (closes 25th June) and more information be accessed here.

Building Centre Retrofit Exhibitions and Talks:

The Building Centre in London are running an exhibition ‘Retrofit 23: Towards a Deep Retrofit of Homes at Scale’. The exhibition ‘looks at how we achieve residential retrofitting at scale and focuses on how improving the performance of a home brings economic, social, and environmental benefits’, and will run until 29th September 2023 In addition to the displays, there are a series of both online and in-person free talks (throughout June, July and September) concerning topics such as retrofitting historic homes, reflecting on retrofit performance over ten years, and breathable insulation and healthy air quality. You can find information about the exhibition here and the talks here.

CAN - Clean Air Networks Conference:

Registration is now closed for the CAN conference.  If you are keen to attend, you can still be added to the waiting list, so please contact us if this is the case for you. The conference (5-6th July 2023) will celebrate and reflect upon the work of the networks over the past few years, as well as looking ahead to the future role networks play in air quality research.

We are excited to confirm keynote speakers Professor Roy Harrison (University of Birmingham) and Professor Anna Hansell (University of Leicester) for each day of the conference, respectively. Invited speakers across the conference programme have now been confirmed and it is great to see lots of HEICCAM representation. There is more information about the conference here.

Atmospheric Science Letters Special Editions:

Atmospheric Science Letters are running a special issue focusing on `Air Pollution at the Indoor-Outdoor interface for Built Environments.’ They are calling for papers considering (but not limited to) the following topics: modelling of transport processes and dispersion of air pollutants (biological and manmade contaminants) within or across indoor and outdoor environments; the influence of source type and location on individual or population air pollution exposures; the relationship of behaviour /activity to levels of indoor and outdoor pollution exposure; the influence of indoor/outdoor environmental conditions on the development and transport of localized air pollution plumes; and the relationship of indoor and outdoor urban environments to the air pollution exposure of different vulnerable populations.

You can find more information on the call for papers here.

Recent publications by network members:

If you are publishing work that you think the rest of the network may be interested in, please feel free to send us a link once it is available online!

Upcoming Events & Conferences

Healthy Buildings Europe

This conference is hosted at RWTH Aachen University under the auspices of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). This year's conference theme is “Beyond disciplinary boundaries – Transdisciplinary perspectives on multisensory stimulation for innovative and creative solutions in a Post-Covid era.” It will take place from 11-14th June, 2023 in Aachen (Germany). More details here.

Clean Air Day 2023

15th June 2023. This day marks the UK’s largest campaign on air pollution and this year the theme is around the impact of air pollution on mental health. The campaign will also be encouraging people to visit the Clean Air Hub  to learn about air pollution and engage with their community. Keep an eye out for posts and events around the day!

Clean Air Networks Conference

The Clean Air Networks Conference will bring together HEICCAM and other Clean Air research networks to share insights on cross-cutting themes and develop research strategies for the future. Invites are being circulated to speakers and the programme has been confirmed. The conference will take place at the University of Birmingham's Edgbaston Park Hotel on 5-6th July, 2023. You can find out more here.

Routes to Clean Air Conference

This conference, organised by the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM), is aimed towards air quality practitioners and associated professionals. It will take place from 10-11th October, 2023 in Manchester and currently welcomes abstract submissions on a variety of topics, including Indoor Air Quality and Measurement and Assessment of Air Quality (incl. low-cost technologies). See here for the full call.

Future seminars

We have plans for a series of short form (15 minutes or less) ‘work in progress’ talks for online lunchtime seminars. If you would be interested in sharing your work with the network, getting some interesting feedback and different perspectives, let us know and we will facilitate a seminar. Alternatively, if you have a suggestion of a speaker (for a long or short talk), let us know.

Our sister network TAPAS have a free online seminar on Thursday 8th June 1-2pm. This seminar will be hosted by Rowan Ryrie & Claire Larkin from Parents for Future UK, on the topic of 'Engaging parents as part of school communities'. Find out more here

Another of sister networks, Breathing City (FUVN), are also running webinars in June. Most past talks can be viewed on YouTube, and the topic for the next talk (on 20th June) is yet to be announced. Stay up to date here.

Early Career Researchers Updates

As mentioned above, we have begun work on an ECR-led collaborative article on the future of indoor air quality. This work will be ongoing over the next few months in regular online working sessions and we are excited to see how it will continue to progress.
