June PSS Meeting Recap

Our June meeting was a great recap of the work PSS has been doing in the last few months with the Demographic Alignment Committee, campus committee reports, and incoming senators.
  • Campus Committee Updates
    • PSS senators serve on a variety of campus committees as well as internal PSS committees. We did a quick recap of what these committees have been discussing this year.
  • Revisioning PSS Committees
    • We used our small group time to discuss what we want to focus on for FY24 and how we are structuring our internal committees.
  • Executive Committee Elections
    • PSS will be running executive committee elections from our current senator pool in July.

Check out the meeting minutes for additional information.

PSS Demographic Alignment Committee Report

PSS voted in February to create the Ad-hoc Demographic Alignment Committee who, at the conclusion of their work, would generate the following report for the June 2023 senate meeting. The committee was charged with gathering demographic data on the exempt staff population and comparing it to the demographic data of serving senators from FY23. The committee was not charged with solving any demographic misalignment, but this report offers recommendations and suggestions for areas of focus based on the data results.

COLA & Merit Increases Next Month

To read more information on COLA & Merit Increases in FY2024, see the UMBC Community News post here. If you have questions or need additional guidance, please consult your supervisor.

Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)
All Regular faculty and staff, Contingent II staff, and graduate assistants will receive a 2 percent COLA increase, effective July 1, 2023. Eligible employees must have been on the university payroll since June 30, 2023, to be eligible for the COLA.

Merit Increases
A 2.5 percent merit pool, effective July 1, 2023, will be distributed to each division and applies to Regular faculty and staff and Contingent II staff. Merit increases will be based on a PMP overall rating of "effective" or better for the rating period of April 1, 2022, through March 31, 2023 (if a PMP was not submitted for an eligible employee for that period, the overall rating will be considered "effective").

Eligibility
Regular exempt staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 15, 2023, to be considered for a merit increase. Contingent II staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 1, 2023, (nonexempt staff) or January 15, 2023, (exempt staff) to be considered for a merit increase.

For 12-month employees, the increases will be reflected in your paycheck dated July 21, 2023.

Meet the Senator - Bryan Barnes

Hello Colleagues!

I'm Bryan Barnes, and my role at UMBC is director of digital strategy in the new division of University Communications and Marketing. Since joining UMBC in 2019, I've been focused on enhancing the University’s digital ecosystem for improved productivity, as I oversee the management of the "Sites” platform, which hosts over 500 UMBC websites. Currently, I’m working with my team to develop a new UMBC.edu website, alongside other major tools and services that will support our community moving forward.

With a background in digital strategy, I've worked with Maryland's Office of Tourism, the National Aquarium, and the Baltimore Orioles. Outside of work, I enjoy happy hours, traveling, and exploring vegan food. I recently got married to my wife Megan and we had a fun experience recently taking a tintype photo that I’ve attached here!

Looking forward to collaborating with you soon!
-Bryan
