Hello from reporter Jonathan Bym. I met up with another sportswriter friend of mine in Holly Springs Saturday following the state baseball championship series ending the North Moore baseball season. He was in the area covering a softball championship in Durham, so it was a good chance to catch up with our busy schedules keeping us from checking in as frequently as we would like.

Once the first round was poured, he lifted his glass and toasted that our summer was finally upon us, and then he went on to describe his plans for a possible beach trip  and other getaways sometime before high school football starts back up.

While he gets a chance to kick back, my chances will be few. With the Sandhills Bogeys' season now in full swing, and a few weeks of amateur golf championships and preparations for next summer's U.S. Open on the horizon, I might get to sneak off for a long weekend vacation sometime soon.

“I want to make it clear that it is an amendment to our ordinance only to allow the use, fright terminal as a special-use permit in the B-2 zoning district,” County planning director Debra Ensminger said. “It was not to hear or approve the specific use of Mr. Angus McDonald.”

County Expands Access for Freight Terminals

The Moore County Board of Commissioners approved an amendment that could allow freight terminals in highway commercial zoning districts, provided they first get a special permit.

The text amendment comes from a request to reopen a freight business near the Seven Lakes West community and across from West End Elementary School. The operation would involve unloading materials from train cars and transferring them to trucks for delivery.

The operation could occur if part-owner Angus McDonald chooses to apply for a special-use permit. A separate public hearing would be held.

Steve Woodward was seated on the Sandhills Community College Board of Trustees Monday afternoon.

Public Education Critic Seated on SCC Board

Pinehurst resident Steve Woodward was seated Monday night on the Sandhills Community College’s Board of Trustees, but whether he will remain there after July 1 is still up to the state legislature.

The Moore County Board of Education originally appointed Woodward to a board seat beginning July 1. But that seat, which had been occupied by local attorney Art Blue, became vacant late last month after Blue died unexpectedly.

Rather than hold the seat open a month, the school board on Monday unanimously named Woodward to fill out the remaining month of Blue’s term. However, the school board, which appoints four members to the college’s oversight board, may lose its appointment authority under legislation currently pending in the state budget being hashed out between House and Senate conferees.

Beatles Tribute Concert to Benefit Care Clinic

The captivating, fun, exciting spirit that came to be known as "Beatlemania" is alive again in The Return.

Authentic and entertaining, the four lads have carefully and skillfully recreated the Beatles experience by not only performing all the great songs of the original four, but also by sporting the same suits, boots, mop-tops, musical instruments and gear. The June 16 event at Cooper Ford in Carthage will benefit the Moore Free and Charitable Clinic.

Local Students to Play Volleyball for Flyers

Pinecrest seniors Sydney Garner and Lainey Mullins have committed to play indoor and beach volleyball at Sandhills Community College next year.

Mullins earned all-conference honors for the second time last fall for a 24-3 Patriot squad that was undefeated in the Sandhills Athletic Conference and advanced to the third round of the 4A state playoffs.

Garner has been playing volleyball for six years, but did not play last fall. As a junior, she was a member of a Patriot squad that compiled a record of 22-5, including a 12-0 mark in the Sandhills Athletic Conference. She also lettered in softball at Pinecrest and played club volleyball at NC Academy and AC Sandhills.
