Art to Change the World (ACW)  is a diverse non-profit coalition of change makers employing the arts in service of positive social change.
Message from the Director
Project Management Training Program Funded

I write this month to announce that the next evolution of this wild pony ride we call ACW has been fiscally supported by a donor who has asked to remain anonymous. This generosity will provide for multiple ACW leaders to design and implement projects. Project managers generally earn between $200 and $500. You can pursue an entire degree focused on how to run a project. There are so many moving parts!  The one-day ACW training session we are designing will include Practical Nuts and Bolts in the morning and Head and Heart curriculum in the afternoon. Six ACW community leaders and businesspersons will also be speaking.  We hope to offer our one-day training this September or October. Are you interested?   Please post info@arttochangetheworld.org.

Welcome to new Intern KaoLee Vang  (pronounced “kow-lee”)

KaoLee is a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, located in Minneapolis, where she is currently pursuing a degree in Arts and Cultural Leadership. She splits her time between Colorado and the Twin Cities. My educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in studio art with a focus on printmaking. Throughout my career, she has gained experience in print design and various roles within the printing industry. However, in recent years, she has shifted her focus toward museum work and collecting oral histories as part of her graduate degree. She is currently developing her capstone project.

When not working, studying, or running her own little business making polymer clay earrings she spends time outside, listening to music, and traveling.

You can find her work and projects at https://kaoleevang.com as well as ongoing project Threads of Heritage at https://threadsofheritage.com

When I joined as an intern in July 2022, I quickly realized I’d found a space I could belong to. I’ve made many wonderful friends and expanded my knowledge of the arts, social justice projects, and working in leadership. People appreciate my hard work and I’m actually making a difference.
The best part is there is something for everyone and no matter what the activity is it’s always welcoming, fun, and educational. Pride, Joy, and Resistance

By Laura Mann-Hill -Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator

In June, we celebrate Juneteenth, and numerous spaces in our local community cultivate spaces for collective resistance against oppressive systems so that Black people can continue to seek freedom. June is also celebrated as PRIDE month, recognizing the sheroes and revolutionaries leading the charge and opening doors for many other liberatory movements. It is important to find joy and healing in our resistance work and take moments to connect and care for one another amidst the relentlessness of those who seek to deny us joy and humanity. My hope is for each of us to find that joy in our struggle and commitment to change.

JUNE GALLERY SHOW   CARL ANDERSON: Perfect Day

JUNE 9-30, 2023    Homewood Studios  https://homewoodstudios.com

Opening Reception- Friday, June 9 from 6 pm to 9 pm
Carl Writes about this show: In 2019 I went through the most painful time in my life when my wife of nineteen years left me and filed for divorce. The day she and my daughters left I woke up to an empty house and feeling lost. I was listening to music and Lou Reed’s Perfect Day came on the radio. The song struck a chord with me and I became obsessed with it. The melancholy instrumental matched what I was feeling but the lyrics described something wonderful that I longed for. I began writing a journal in the form of a screenplay to help work through my emotional pain and kept journaling for three years. My life became a movie and started the most amazing journey of my life.
I had been a high school art teacher and years before had a promising art career with a productive studio practice. But over the years life got in the way and my studio practice fell to the side. Not long after my divorce was final, the most interesting, beautiful, and charismatic person came into my life and started a long and storied courtship, a courtship that continues to this day and hopefully will last the rest of my life. At one point she said to me, “Why don’t you paint anymore? It’s the most interesting thing about you.” So I resumed my studio practice illustrating events in my screenplay Perfect Day and came to realize that I have lived the perfect day I longed for over and again with her.
I have always been interested in portraying images with loaded meaning. Building images with collage elements allows me to embed deeper meaning and convey more of a story than what can be said with paint alone. Postmodern principles of layering, juxtaposition, representin’, and appropriation have always fascinated me and I play with those concepts throughout this body of work.

By Rose Cooper-  ACW Facebook Coordinator
Art To Change the World has reached a new milestone in its journey to growth. Last month we reached 1000 followers on Facebook! This is a very exciting achievement! Especially when we live in a time where fewer people are on the platform and see it as a dinosaur in the world of social media. Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, etc. newer platforms are taking over the world of social media and making it difficult for older platforms to compete. That being said, Facebook isn’t dead or dying, but rather it’s evolving to stay relevant for all of its users worldwide. Some of you might be surprised to learn that Facebook still holds 2.9 billion users worldwide. Compared to 2 billion on Instagram and 2.2 billion on Youtube, Facebook is still very much a powerhouse in the world of social media.
So Thank you to each and every one of our Facebook friends! Thank you all for continuing to drive our engagement, share our content, and help take ACW to the next level. If you want to stay up to date on all things ACW, follow us on Facebook! We can’t wait to see how many friends we can have in the future! And it starts with all of you!

Paint to Process Success!
Paint to Process is the ACW project from the brilliant mind of one of our interns, Alkemy. As a house-bound individual, Alkemy wanted to come up with a project where people could create art in their homes but still be able to have a discussion online about it, involving healing from past trauma. They were able to send art supplies to participants' homes and share and discuss art and life on the online platform Discord.
Alkemy reports that “The project has gone well. Members meet online once a week to express themselves artistically and support each other through the good and the difficult. Some great conversations and art have been had.”
One of the participants volunteered to continue to run the project, so we will keep it going as long as there is interest and someone to run it. If anyone would like to join Paint to Process email Seren at
bedsidearts@gmail.com
You can see the project page here: https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/paint-to-process/

Art WILL change the world and it starts with US! “Art Speaks” is written by Kelly Frankenberg and represents her personal viewpoint, not the policies of ACW. For more info about Kelly and her art, go to http://www.kellyfrankenberg.com
When mentioning the term “starving artist” to a non-native English speaker, they translated it to “hungry artist.” I thought it was funny, but what I did not realize until later is that really is the term. We can eat- we are not starving, but we are hungry. We are hungry to make art and are not filled up or satisfied until we do. We are hungry to get profits from our art to make more. The hunger drives us. But is it a selfish thing to fuel our need to create?
We create art to inspire, educate, tell a story, to foster change. Experiencing art fills people with culture and ideas.
Without paid artists, there will be no artists.
There is a notion that artists are all ill and must create therefore maybe we should pay people to come look at our art. The studio sign should say, “ The artist is hungry, but do not feed the artist-pay them!” We are essential to humanity. According to Kandinsky, we are at the top of the pyramid of beings
. Our art fuels our generations. So give us fuel to continue.
