Memorial Day Special Blast

Greetings, Wolverines. This is the day we remember those who paid the ultimate price for their country. A time to also remember our loving families and friends, our coaches and athletes who are no longer with us. Many athletes began the traditions we continue today. Memorial Day is often called Flag Day and sometimes communities celebrate by lining their streets with flags, with ceremonies in local cemeteries.

Michigan Athletics had a great season with 13 Big Ten Championships. Many sports went on to the NCAA finals. Our student athletes continue to break school records, with individuals successfully competing in their respective sports. Men and women’s outdoor track and field are still competing in the NCAA championships.

We recently learned that Mike Bottom, the swimming and diving coach, will be retiring in August. Coach Bottom was a speaker at our Monday luncheons and was always very well received. We have been fortunate to have so many excellent coaches and their staff joining us these past weeks, often providing us with a behind-the-scenes peek at what’s happening with their players.

Our April 17 luncheon was a great success with Dave Ablauf receiving the Woodman Award for his service to our club.  Jake Moody was honored with the Michigan Man Award determined by Coach Jim Harbaugh. Our guest speakers, Jon Jansen and Jack Harbaugh, did not disappoint with their stories about Michigan football. I only wish we could have videoed their performance! We had a successful “I don’t need this anymore, maybe someone can enjoy” event.  We were able to raise more than $500 for scholarships. Thanks to all who participated and especially to Joyce Galindo and her committee.

Welcome to our newest members. We look forward to seeing you at our August Kick-off Luncheon.

Finally, attached are the pictures from our April 17 event, thanks again to Joyce Galindo.  Enjoy the lovely, sunny warm day.  Think happy thoughts about beating you know who this fall, and give those near and dear to you a hug.  Go Blue!
