Theres a kind of Zen philosophy about a winery that makes just one wine. I think it was one of the boof-head "celebrity chefs" who said that one needs to try making something 1000 times to achieve perfection but in the relatively few years since 1991 when Galardi kicked off they are pretty close to it already.
The annual accolades for the Galardi Terra di Lavoro in Campania are so significant that they are almost perfunctory. The vintages here today are both rated 96/100 by Suckling. I have managed to persuade enough clients-turned-drinking-mates to collect these over the years - so I have consumed their vintages deeply and they are a thrill to experience.
From uber-rich volcanic soils comes this fabulous blend of Aglianico and Piedrosso grapes (80/20). The thing that struck when I had my first taste of it - is a flinty perfumed sleekness to the nose, a lush yet measured abundance on the palate and a long sculptured finish. Its this amalgam of influences that has assured this wine's presence amongst the greats of Italy for a long time to come.
