Newsletter - June 2023

Welcome to our June newsletter

This month our newsletter includes:

Directors Update

The first week of June was Volunteers Week, a fantastic opportunity for organisations to celebrate the hard work and dedication of their volunteers.

Here at Healthwatch East Sussex we couldn’t achieve all that we do without the commitment and dedication of all our wonderful volunteers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their hard work and I look forward to seeing many of them at our thank you event on the 23rd of June.

On the 13th of July we will be holding our Annual Event. The theme of this years event is ‘Your Voice Matters’. If you haven’t already signed up to attend, please do so, it’s a great opportunity to hear from our partners and volunteers. You can find out more about the event and register your place by visiting our website here.

We have also recently welcomed some new team members here at Healthwatch East Sussex and East Sussex Community Voice, including our new Trainee Engagement Officer Kira.

Kira joined the team at the end of May, and is passionate about creating positive change in the community and championing young people to ensure that their voices are heard.

She obtained her BSc degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Chichester in 2022. It is great to have Kira here as part of the team!

I look forward to introducing you to some of our other new team members in future newsletters.

To help design the app, they are seeking your opinion about what data to collect, and any concerns about aspects such as privacy.

Everyone, regardless of their background or lifestyle, is welcome to participate in sharing their views.

The plan looks back on the last 10 years of Healthwatch and how the work that has been completed can be built on and progressed. The document outlines their goals, including:

The NHS Volunteer Responders programme is expanding into social care

The government have announced that they are expanding the NHS Volunteers Responders Programme into social care

Following the NHS Volunteer Responders programme launched during the pandemic, the government has announced it will expand into social care to form a joint NHS and Care volunteering programme and allow care providers to recruit volunteers to help people in their local areas.

The scheme will use the same GoodSAM app that NHS volunteers currently use, to bring providers and volunteers together.

The roles available for care volunteers are:

  • Check in and Chat Plus: contacting people who have been identified as particularly vulnerable to offer a friendly voice to those who may be experiencing loneliness

  • Pick up and Deliver: helping to transport medicines or small items of medical equipment to people’s homes or community settings from NHS sites to aid discharge from hospital or continued healthcare support

  • Community Response: collecting and delivering food shopping and essential items as well as prescriptions and medications to people in the community

FlexiBus - a new way to travel around East Sussex

East Sussex County Council have recently launched FlexiBus - a new flexible, on demand rideshare service operating across the county.

Available in more rural areas of the county where traditional bus services don't quite reach, FlexiBus can take you to meet a friend, to the shops, your nearest town or to a medical appointment.

The cost of a FlexiBus ride is equivalent to a standard bus fare, capped at £2 for a single journey until the end of October or you can buy an adult day pass for £5.

As FlexiBus is a ride share service you may pick up or drop of others on your way.

If you have questions or want to book a ride you can call 01273 078203 (6.30am to 7.30pm, Monday to Saturday).

If you're happy using an App, download RidePingo and start planning your journey.

People aged 60 and over will continue to receive free NHS prescriptions

On the 15th June 2023, the government confirmed that everyone over the age of 60 will continue to receive free prescriptions.

The announcement comes in response to a consultation launched by the Department of Health and Social Care in 2021 looking at whether the age that free prescriptions become available, should be aligned with the State Pension age, which is currently 66.

Taking into account a number of factors, including current cost of living and increased medical needs due to an ageing population, the government has decided to freeze the age for prescriptions at 60.

Health and Wellbeing Tips from our staff: Keeping safe in the hot weather

As the weather heats up over the summer months, it is important to stay safe in the heat and look after ourselves and others.
Tips for staying safe during hot weather:
  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and avoid too much alcohol.
  • Look out for people who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated.
  • Do not rely on sunscreen alone to protect you from the sun, wear suitable clothing and spend time in the shade.
The NHS website has lots of guidance and tips for coping in the hot weather and information on those most at risk during hot weather on their website here.

East Sussex County Council have also shared tips on how to keep cool in a heatwave on their website here.

Healthwatch -  What we have heard about health and care services in East Sussex

Have you caught up with what we heard through Enquiries in 2022-2023?

Earlier this month we published a report detailing what we heard through enquiries in 2022-2023
During this time our Information and Signposting service responded to 467 enquiries and supported the public, patients and others to access, navigate and feedback on services.
More than half (52.0%) of the enquiries received related to GP services and dentistry. We also heard about hospital services, both in East Sussex, and further afield. Some enquiries were complex and involved a range of health, care and other services.

Enquiries about mental health services were relatively low in number, but mental health often arose in enquiries we received about other services.
Our Feedback Centre received 145 reviews from people sharing their experiences of health and care.

We received reviews highlighting positive, negative and mixed experiences of health and care.

Positives reviews highlighted professionalism, courtesy, good communications and outcomes.

Negative reviews focused on long wait times, concerns over quality and safety of care and services not being patient-centric.

Within our yearly report you can also read;
  • A summary of key health and care themes we have heard
  • Feedback you have shared with us
  • Examples of how we have used this information to influence change
  • Our plans for engagement and service development in 2023-24
