Celebrating a Milestone: ECREM's Inaugural Joint AD Unites EM Residents Across the UAE

We are thrilled to extend our warmest congratulations to ECREM (Emirates Collaboration of Residents in Emergency Medicine) for successfully hosting the first Joint Academic Day in collaboration with ESEM. This event took place at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi on May 18, 2023, and marked an important milestone in the field of EM in the UAE. It served as an opportunity for residents to come together, fostering meaningful connections and expanding their professional networks beyond their respective programs. It was a testament to the collective commitment and dedication of the EM community in the United Arab Emirates.

Dr Rasha Buhumaid, President of ESEM, delivered an insightful talk titled "A Day in the Life of Ultrasound Fellowship." Her expertise and valuable insights shed light on the journey of ultrasound fellowships, enriching the understanding of all in attendance. For the resident lecture series, Dr Maitha Al Mazrouei, PGY3 CCAD, presented her talk on "The Golden Hour of Trauma". The day was brimming with excitement as participants engaged in a variety of enjoyable activities, including the thrilling ECREM Jeopardy and an immersive EM escape room experience. Four teams battled it out in jeopardy which saw the ‘Firing Squad’ team led by Dr Martin from Zayed Military Hospital claim victory. Dr Heba Ahmed, PGY1 CCAD and Dr Yousif Alkhafaji, PGY 2 Tawam Hospital, beat the clock to bag the top spot in the escape room. These activities not only fostered camaraderie among the attendees but also provided a platform for knowledge sharing and collaborative learning.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the ECREM team for their remarkable efforts in organizing this successful event. We would also like to acknowledge all the participants, speakers and faculty who contributed their expertise and made the day truly memorable. As we celebrate this significant milestone, let us embrace the spirit of collaboration and continued learning!

Case of the Month

We tend to diligently follow the latest updates on lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (LEDVT), as it condition presents challenges in terms of diagnosis and management. However, it is important to acknowledge that upper extremity DVT (UEDVT), although less common, presents even greater diagnostic and therapeutic approach complexities, with similar risks of complications as lower extremity DVT. The increased utilization of central venous catheters, cardiac pacemakers/defibrillators, and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines has contributed to a rise in the incidence of UEDVT.  In this edition of case of the month segment, Dr. Tasnim Mohmaed, Emergency Medicine resident at Zayed Military Hospital, shares with us an interesting case of UEDVT. To learn more about UEDVT access the full article here.

Tip of the Month

"Four eyes are better than two!"

Emergency physicians should establish a routine practice of thoroughly assessing the radiographic examinations they order for their patients. This is essential as they know better what they are trying to confirm or exclude by the intended imaging study. Furthermore, this practice mitigates errors, reducing the likelihood of missed or nearly missed diagnoses, as the involvement of multiple professional interpreters, namely, the emergency physician and the radiologist, enhances accuracy. Moreover, timely evaluation of radiographic studies facilitates the expeditious determination of the diagnoses, enables prompt treatment planning, and facilitates appropriate patient dispositioning.
