Weekly Devotional
It is that time of season again - endurance. The foundation or base is set, and now it is time to ramp up and build some ultimate endurance as I prepare for the Breck Epic MTB race in August. How do I build endurance? Well, generally it is slower, longer rides. I have to get hours and hours in the saddle because I’m not just building up leg strength, I am building total endurance, including building up tolerance of my back side to sit in a saddle for 6 hours a day for 6 days. I also need to build endurance to wear mountain bike shoes for that long. Building endurance is really the key to many sports. I recently (yesterday) took my daughter to a climbing gym as she is interested in getting into climbing. The person that gave us a tour talked about building muscular and tendon endurance. He said that our muscles will often outpace our tendons, and shared with us the slow build over time to help build endurance. He also talked about top rope climbing and the height of the wall - start on shorter walls and build up to taller walls because you need to build endurance. The more endurance you build, the more joy you ultimately get from a long stage race like the Breck Epic, or accomplishing the taller wall when rock climbing. There are many mentions in the Bible of us building up endurance in our faith journey - specifically Hebrews 11 and 12. However, I want to focus on God’s enduring faithfulness and love to us.
As I was reading through Psalm, God’s enduring love is written about a lot. Consider Psalm 117 which simply says, “Praise the Lord, all you nations. Praise him, all you people of the earth. For he loves us with unfailing love; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever.”
Similarly, Psalm 118 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” … vs. 28 and 29 then state, “You are my God, and I will praise you! You are my God, and I will exalt you! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.”
Unlike athletic endeavors where we have to train and train to build endurance to accomplish our goals, God’s love and faithfulness endures forever. I don’t think God had to build up his endurance - although, as sinners, we certainly put God’s endurance and faithfulness to the test. Ultimately, though, God won by sending his only son, Jesus, to take on our sin, which deserved death, to die on a cross, be buried, and rise again from the dead to sit on the right side of the throne of God almighty. If this doesn’t demonstrate God’s enduring love and faithfulness, I’m not sure what does. That is truly something to praise and as Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
I know many in this group and all around us are going through pain, suffering, struggles - whether physical, mental, at work, or at home. Through it all, remember that God’s faithfulness and love endures forever. That is truly something to praise. Our struggles today, while real, are a very short part of our eternal journey. Keep focused on keeping the first thing first.
