MAY 2023
May has left us as quickly as it came in. Where is this year going, I sure would like to
slow it down. I have read that the Vietnam Veterans' age is seventy-seven years
old on average. We had many birthdays last month including Rod Phillips. Happy
Birthday to all of you.

We started the month with the reunion in Melbourne where I thought the
numbers were down but the excitement was still there. I sometimes think our age
has something to do with it.

M.I.A.P. had a Call to Honor in May in South Florida and will not schedule another
until this fall. Veterans and wives are ready to go to Cape Canaveral when
the northern Recovery Teams get enough for a Call to Honor.

Fundraising at Sam’s Club will be two days for Memorial Day weekend. On Sunday
The Patriot of Year Awards Program was held at the Jewish Center where Jerry Gomes got that Honor for this year. Congrats Jerry for all you do for Veterans and especially VVA 1048. Also, with the ceremonies planned the Honor
Guard did the rifle volley and raised the Flag at the Casements on Monday.

Membership Drive continued in May and the Chapter thanks to 1st Vice Sawicki
turned in 18 new members to National. It was a very successful Drive this year
and maybe continue in the fall Our Goal of 375 will be met this year early. Thank
You Members for all the help.

The Museum and Education Center is having its 1st anniversary with the
dedication of a Memorial POW/MIA Chair on June 3 rd 1100. Also, the Honor Guard
will Preform at the ceremony.

On Friday, a Stand Down is scheduled for June 9th, 1000 hrs. at Volusia County Fair Grounds
with about 40 vendors or Veteran Organizations to help our Veterans.

June 9 th and 10 th the Florida State Council has a meeting scheduled at the Marriott Hotel in Lake Mary Florida. The agenda will be The National Convention being held in Orlando from August 8 th thru 12 th at the Rosen Resorts. All are welcome to  attend the meeting on Saturday starting a 0830.

Thank the Board for looking after me and Cathy during these trying
times. My soon-to-be 95-year-old mother who lives 900 miles away fell and broke
her hip and she is in a nursing home which I travel back and forth to deal with. I
want you to know that this situation is not easy. Keep doing what you do and help a Vet along the way.

Be safe and God Bless America Again.

           Diana Schaack
     AVVA Representative

Our June meeting was a huge success.

It was suggested that AVVA Incorporate but after a lengthy discussion, the membership decided not to proceed down that road. At a later date when VVA dissolves, we will revisit the idea. Our special guests were John McGinty, FSCVVA State President, Kim Biddle, AVVAFA State President, and Mary Anne Newman, Region 4 AVVA Deputy Director who all gave us so much insight about VVA/AVVA guidelines.

After the business portion, we had a “Show and Tell” of crafts or projects we are working on. We have so many talented members who showed off their 3D shadow boxes, needlework greeting cards, Diamond art projects, a darling crocheted baby pouch, a super large shell collection, a portfolio of murals painted at a cancer camp for children, and custom jewelry. Even the spouses showed off their military certificates and hand-carved wooden horns. It was great to get to know another side of our personalities.

Our next AVVA meeting will be July 14, noon at Houligans.

We continue the Mission of AVVA focusing on programs and educational materials to support Veterans and their families.  We are dedicated to advancing the awareness of issues affecting Veterans, their families, and their communities. AVVA strives to ensure that ALL Veterans attain the honor, respect, and benefits they deserve.

I grew up in Detroit Michigan. Joined the Army in 1968. Went to basic training at Ft.Knox Kentucky. Then AIT at Ft. Leonardwood MO. Then back to Ft. Knox for Armour school. After that I got my orders for Vietnam. I was assigned to the 5th Infantry Division in Quang Tri Province on the DMZ. I  served as a perimeter guard at LZ Sharon from 6/15/69 -6/15/70. I was awarded a Bronze Star and the Army Comendatsion medal.
After Vietnam I was stationed in Germany with the 32nd. Mobile Army Sergical Hospital. We were sent to Aman Jordan to get their new Hospital up and running. We ran convoys from the airport with supplies for the Army Corps of Engineers to get the Hospital up and running. Before we left the Middle East we visited Jerusalem and stopped over in Athens Greece and toured there. Then I was discharged from Ft. Dix New Jersey.
Then in civilian life I started a job and worked for the same company for 40 years. I retired and moved to Florida in 2012. I have been a member of VVA for 34 years. I was with Chapter 528 in Michigan. I was on their color guard for 25 year's. I joined Chapter 1048 and was in the color guard until I was diagnosed with cancer due to Agent Orange. After radiation   chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant I'm doing well. I will be on a maintenance chemotherapy for the rest of my life. I'm proud to be a member of 1048.

Please keep Dennis Noell in your prayers for his illness.  We had a very good turn out for Bill Gamble's funeral at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery...thanks to all who supported his family during this time of remembrance.
