Duane McGuire
Bio: Duane started fiddling with pianos in 1974 after he took a short course from a technician in Seattle. He was a hobbyist until 2008 when he upped his game by joining the PTG. He then built a shop for major work and maintained a full tuning schedule for ten years or more. He now considers himself to be retired, and is slowly working through a collection of vintage pianos that have found him over the years. With commitment and a bit of luck, he'll complete those projects in his remaining years.
Working with wood has been a constant in Duane's life and career. He was first paid for woodworking as a craftsman at Bigelow Organs in American Fork where he was part of the team building world class tracker pipe organs. After full time woodworking there for three years, he set down the tools and didn't pick them up again for several years, but he's happy putting the skills to work now with the many creative aspects of piano reconditioning and rebuilding.
Technical: Woodworking 101 for piano technicians
Many who enter our field come with a background in music. Those who have not previously worked with wood, soon find that they too are woodworkers as they get into piano repairs. Titled "Woodworking 101 for piano technicians" this class presents core information about the material, "wood". While examining the properties of wood, we will gain insight into refinements and good methods for repairs in pianos. The class is focused on field repairs, with attention to the details presented by the material itself. The class is designed for technicians with limited technical knowledge of woodworking, but all technicians should come away with some insights.
