EVALUACIÓN DE LAS AMENAZAS AL SITIO DE PATRIMONIO MUNDIAL NATURAL
“PARQUE NACIONAL CANAIMA” AL AÑO 2023

"El Parque Nacional Canaima (PNC), creado en 1962 y ampliado en 1975 (Venezuela, 1962; 1975) es probablemente el área protegida venezolana más famosa en el mundo, conocida principalmente por estar allí la caída de agua libre más alta del mundo, el Salto Angel. Fue aceptado por la UNESCO como Sitio de Patrimonio Mundial Natural (SPM) en el año 1996. Este reconocimiento significa una responsabilidad para todos los venezolanos y muy especialmente para el ente gubernamental que administra este parque nacional, que está en la obligación de analizar, conceptualizar, y aplicar medidas que ofrezcan garantías de conservación de sus valores a largo plazo.

SOSOrinoco ha venido haciéndole un seguimiento al impacto de la minería sobre este SPM, ya que es ésta la amenaza visible más impactante y que está erosionando aceleradamente los valores del Sitio. Igualmente hemos publicados en World Heritage Watch, durante tres años consecutivos, resúmenes sobre nuestros hallazgos, que han querido alertar a UNESCO sobre el indetenible avance de este deterioro."

ASSESSMENT OF THREATS TO THE NATURAL WORLD HERITAGE SITE
"CANAIMA NATIONAL PARK" IN THE YEAR 2023

"The Canaima National Park (PNC), created in 1962 and expanded in 1975 (Venezuela, 1962; 1975) is probably the most famous Venezuelan protected area in the world, known mainly for having the highest free waterfall in the world: Angel Falls. It was accepted by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site (NWHS) in 1996. This recognition signals elevated responsibility for all Venezuelans, and especially for the government entity that manages this national park, which is obliged to analyze, conceptualize, and apply measures that offer guarantees of conservation of its values in the long term.

SOSOrinoco has been monitoring the impact of mining on this WHS, since this is the most shocking visible threat and it is rapidly eroding the values of the Site. We have also published summaries of our findings in World Heritage Watch for three consecutive years, with the goal of alerting UNESCO to the unstoppable progress of this deterioration."
