Community Development Team


Quarterly Community Development Program Meeting

The Community Development Program quarterly meetings are being hosted next week: 27 June, 14:00 UTC (find your time) and 23:00 UTC (find your time). These meetings are great for anyone supporting a Carpentries subcommunity or interested in community management. You can sign up on the Etherpad if you plan to attend.


Monthly Welcome Sessions

If you are new to The Carpentries community or want to learn more about the organisation, consider joining us for one of our upcoming Welcome Sessions hosted by members of our Core Team: Wednesday, 28 June, 12:00 UTC (find your local time) and 23:00 UTC (find your local time). You can sign up to join one of the calls on our Community Discussions Etherpad.


Director of Community Office Hours

Our Director of Community continues to host office hours each month (recurring dates and times). You can drop in at any point during the hour to ask a question or bring up any topic for discussion.


Workshop Administration Team

Carpentries Instructors, be sure to sign up on the Etherpad for the next Instructor Meeting, Tuesday 11 July at 15:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC.

Instructor Training Team

The Instructor Training team will be rolling out updates to our Instructor Checkout process in late July. Updates are based on feedback we received in 2022 during our project to evaluate this process. Stay tuned to our communications channels for information!

  • 06 July

    • Open Refine: Sharing tips and questions about teaching OR in workshops at 13:00 UTC (find your time; add to calendar)

      • What would you like to share about teaching OpenRefine (whether Library, Software, or Data Carpentry versions)? Any concerns or hurdles? What tips can you share about how you teach OR in the past few years? How are you marketing OR workshops to translate to current jargon and general audiences? Would you prefer this were a Skill-up Session on OpenRefine?

  • 07 July

    • Part 1 (skill-up session): Communication with and convening your Carpentries subcommunity at 0:00 UTC (find your time; add to calendar)

      • A Carpentries subcommunity brings together a subset of the global community and can be local, regional, domain-specific, or a group of community members sharing a common language or interests. This interactive session will review the tools and documentation available to support communicating and convening your subcommunity with space for attendees to share their ideas on what is working well (or not so well). This skill-up will lay the foundation for a later collaboration session (Part 2) to co-create a tip sheet on the same topic. Anyone interested in community building is welcome to join one or both sessions!

  • 10 July

    • Welcome Session 13:00 UTC (find your time; add to calendar)

      • New to The Carpentries community? Join members of the Core Team and community to learn about the organisation, ways to engage, and to have your questions answered. These sessions are ideal for recently trained Instructors, new Member contacts, and anyone curious to learn more about The Carpentries community. This is also a great place to re-onboard if you haven’t been engaged with us for a while!

      • This session will be repeated throughout July. All upcoming Welcome Sessions are listed on the Welcome Sessions Etherpad.

    • Pre/Post Workshop Meeting at 20:00 UTC (find your time; add to calendar)

      • This session will be a chance for you to discuss your previous experience helping/teaching at a workshop or ask questions about teaching/helping at an upcoming workshop with an experienced instructor. You can also get any of your questions about checkout or the Carpentries community in general answered.

  • 12 July

    • Carpentries Fitness Jam at 14:00 UTC (find your time; add to calendar)

      • Join Sher! in a workout that will get you moving and grooving and working up a sweat!

  • 13 July

    • Regional DACH Community Discussion at 15:30 UTC (add to calendar)

      • This is a monthly call for community members in the DACH region (i.e., Germany, Austria, Switzerland) of Europe.

  • The Story Collider is currently seeking to hire a full-time Storytelling Education and Research Director and a freelance producer in Seattle.  The position remains open until filled, but submissions by 22 June are strongly encouraged.


  • The Research Engagement department of the University of Arizona Libraries is hiring a Data Repository Specialist. This posting will remain open until filled. To ensure your application is considered, please submit your application materials by the first review date of June 23, 2023.


  • The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Chapel Hill is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to assist with research involved in an NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution Institute project entitled, Imageomics: A New Frontier of Biological Information Powered by Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning.
