Château Figeac has produced a second wine since 1945 thanks to its visionary owner Thierry Manoncourt (1917-2010). Previously known as "Grangeneuve de Figeac" it was re-named Petit Figeac in the 2012 vintage and is made only from grapes grown in the Figeac vineyard. With the Figeac estate planted approximately one third each Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is essentially a blend of the juice that doesn't fit the blend of the Grand Vin each vintage rather than being from a lesser terroir. In 2022 it represents 12% of Figeac's production.
Director Frédéric Faye and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos did not want to produce a second wine in 2022 as they were convinced the entire crop was of such high quality it could all go into the Grand Vin. Cheval Blanc did the same in 2022, they produced no Petit Cheval, it all went into the Grand Vin, Cheval Blanc.
Frédéric was overruled by Madame Manoncourt, as she wanted to maintain the tradition started by Thierry Manoncourt all those years ago, even if this meant there would be less Grand Vin that could have been sold at a much higher price!
Expressive and complex, with remarkable elegance and harmony, Petit-Figeac 2022, the second wine of Château-Figeac, is a worthy reflection of the magnificent terroir in which it was born and is an absolute must buy!
