Juneteenth

It was not until June 19, 1865, that Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, announcing the freedom of enslaved people in Texas. This day is now known as Juneteenth, derived from the combination of “June” and “nineteenth.”
