Barney Frank, Former Chair of
House Financial Services Committee
to Address Annual Meeting of Members

Please RSVP for the annual meeting of members of the NYS CDFI Coalition which will be held on Zoom on Friday, June 23 from 12 - 1 p.m.

Barney Frank represented the 4th District of Massachusetts in the U. S. Congress from 1981-2013.

As Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, from 2007-2010, he was the co-author of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the regulatory overhaul signed into law in July 2010.

In 1987 he became the first Member of Congress to voluntarily acknowledge that he is gay, and in 2012 became the first sitting Member of Congress to marry a same-sex partner, James Ready.

He has written two books: Speaking Frankly, a critique of some aspects of the Democrats approach to public policy; and a political memoir published in 2015 titled Frank: From the Great Society to Same Sex Marriage.

He has taught at Harvard, Boston University, the University of Massachusetts Boston and the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

Before joining the government, he was a political activist, including participating as a volunteer in the Mississippi Freedom Summer in 1964.

Here are the topics we've asked him to (briefly!) address -

  • his recollections of the effort to pass the Riegle Community Development Banking and Financial Institutions Act of 1994;
  • a brief summary of the Dodd-Frank Act's impact on consumer protection and the role of CDFIs;
  • lessons to be learned from the collapse of Signature Bank; on whose board he served;
  • the need for enhanced deposit insurance for small businesses; and
  • the negative impact of FDIC regulations on affordable housing investing.

In addition to welcoming our Guest Speaker, we will discuss generally the operations of the NYS CDFI Coalition. We welcome any questions you have concerning the Coalition and will provide time during the meeting for questions from our members.
