Opportunities and Success
Dear Parents/Carers
It seems like at this time in every academic year, not a day goes past where our students are having the opportunity to take part in memory making activities, supporting activities in our community, or excelling in the arenas of sport and performing arts.
If you are a year 8 parent, many of your children are currently in Paris. Mr Brown has been keeping me up to date with text messages and photos. It looks like they are having a great time.
Today, our Young Leaders are supporting Balksbury school’s sports day.
Over the last week our year 7 and 11 boys have played in the respective County Cup finals in football.
Our young athletes have taken part in the District Athletics event this week. Many of them won their events and brought back with them a number of new district records.
Finally, our dancers took part in a festival at The Lights this week and put on some wonderful performances.
I could not be prouder of all the John Hanson students who are making the most of the opportunities afforded to them and gaining the success they thoroughly deserve.
Enjoy the weekend with your children.
Regards
Russell Stevens

Junior Elite Diver success
Evie Tierney in Year 9 who is a successful Junior Elite Diver writes:
I am a Junior Elite diver who dives for Southampton Diving Academy. I have competed at British Junior Elites earlier this year; I came 5th on platform making me 5th in Britain on platform for the girls 14-15 age group.
I also competed at Scottish Nationals in December, there I came 2nd, 3rd and 4th on the 3 boards I competed.
In July I will be completing the season with an international competition in Croatia against other Junior Elite divers from other countries.
What an achievement! Congratulations and good luck!!

In 1994, the then Headteacher, Mr Gerry Wilson, appealed for anybody with John Hanson historical documents to return them to the school…….
Then an incredible thing happened, Mr John Barlow, a local solicitor, realised that he had been looking at the school’s original deeds on his office wall for several years. He then promptly returned them to the school! One is dated 24th May 1569 and is signed by John Hanson, the other is from 1737 and is an indenture, both documents are still with us at John Hanson today, they are proudly displayed on Mr Stevens’ office wall.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.
We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.
This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.
