Dear friends and partners,

I hope you will join me in congratulating all the graduates of the Class of 2023, who prevailed through immeasurable challenges with brilliance, strength, and resilience throughout their high school careers. I was proud to join so many of our graduation and culmination ceremonies over the past weeks to wish our students all the best in their future endeavors. No matter where that journey leads next, I have no doubt that the world’s current challenges are no match for our next generation of leaders.

In just a couple weeks, our summer of learning will begin, with hundreds of academic and enrichment programs for kids of all ages, including arts, music, STEM, and free summer camp opportunities. This week, the Board also approved initial plans to invest nearly $150 million in the upcoming major modernization project at Fairfax High, along with over $100 million in campus upgrades and outdoor learning spaces, many in Board District 4. The school year may be over, but our work continues to build a better future for the students and families of LA Unified.

Onward,

My staff and I were thrilled to join as many graduations as LA traffic would allow—including Hollywood HS, Zane Grey HS, Thoreau HS, Whitman HS, Uni HS, SOCES, Pali HS, Venice HS, Reseda HS, Taft HS, Phoenix HS, and WVOC, not to mention the culminations at Third St. ES, Gardner ES, Revere MS, and Marina del Rey MS! Congrats to all our grads!

Local District West / Region WestAmong so many talented and accomplished student leaders in the Class of 2023, I am grateful to have had twelve of them participate in this year's BD4 Youth Advisory Council—including Vanessa Uzan of Venice High. Vanessa was one of the first students to enroll in Venice's Mandarin Dual Language pathway, and next year she heads to the US Naval Academy to study Cybersecurity and Chinese. After college, she plans to serve her country as a Cyber Warfare Officer or Foreign Area Officer. While we will miss Vanessa on our Youth Advisory Council, we're so proud of her accomplishments and have no doubt her success will continue in this next phase of her exciting journey!
